i7 3770K needs de-lidding?

Featured Replies

You need to visit an auto parts store to get anything higher than 800, I found. I spent way too much on sand paper doing it that way, but you've got to be sure...

As for lapping the underside of the IHS - don't.

TechguyMaxC, you mean you just cleaned the underside from the goop, don't you?

Thanks,

Dirk.

Yes, though if you've already used a liquid metal product under the IHS you will have an imprint.

Where did you get your sandpaper from?

What was the standard size of the sandpaper sheets that you used? Still thinking of where I can find the right grade and right size.

Cool stuff, first-class thread, Efrain. A few questions yet:

1) Where did you get your sandpaper from? I noticed you used 2000 and 3000 grades. Even FrozenCPU has only 2500 as the finest and local Home Depot may not have it when I'm visiting my daughter in NY.

2) What was the standard size of the sandpaper sheets that you used? Still thinking of where I can find the right grade and right size.

3) How did you lap the inner side of the IHS? Is it possible at all because of the cavity?

Thanks,

Dirk.

I got mine from NAPA Auto... And no, there is no way to lap the inside of the IHS. Only lap the exterior of the IHS and the bottom of the heatsink.

Sure there is! Just make ur glass sanding block 1cm x 1cm. :LMAO: Just%20Kidding.gif

There's a raised lip, Dirk, that prevents it... as the Bimmer says "no way".

Hmm, will try it with Dremel.

Thanks,

Dirk.

I highly advise you not to do this. The purpose of lapping is to ensure a FLAT surface. You simply cannot do this with a dremel.

I will not then. It was, like, for the sake of the argument anyway. :P

Thanks,

Dirk.

This de lidding business is really quite interesting, however, for some real modifications, take a look here!

This is awesome!

My FSX used to run like it was in oil - No not smooth and friction free - rather more like it was in a bucket of axle grease.

BimmerCop, when you have a minute, could you please post a few photos of your Corsair H100 and H80 cooling units placement in/on the box. I've read very positive reviews about cooling performance by Corsair H100. Sounds like it is very efficient cooling wise and very easy to install (some say you can just replace its 2 blowers to slightly improve it). But the hoses of Corsair are rather short, so I'd like to see how you can mount the units close enought to CPU and GPU. I'll maybe even get the same box.

Thanks,

Dirk.

Bimmercop, I don't think I'll be using GPU extra-cooling at all, so H80 is not that important.

I'd really like to see how Corsair H100 sits in/on the box.

Much thanks,

Dirk.

Dirk...

he's probably asleep and wouldn't be surprised if w/o power by the time he is up.

Just do a google image search on the H100.

E.g. if you look here http://www.corsair.com/blog/corsair-link-gaming-pc-build-log and look the pic right below where it says "To power the entire machine the AX1200 was installed into the bottom of the 800D." you'll see a good example. I have mine in a Silverstone TJ-07... looks almost identical to that mounting in the 800D. Difference is I decided to place the one fan (the one closest to the tubing) on the top of the case, but the fan still screws into the radiator... reason because I felt the fan just a wee bit too close to the mb.

And if you are looking for a certain case... just check the reviews at newegg as people invariably comment about what case they use... or the reverse - look the review for the case and see if any comment about the H100.

Ozzie, thanks for the link, interesting, I think I'll fit H100 in one of Cooler Master boxes, but I don't want it to be too tall. I still want to see BimmerCop shows and explains it, as I know I'll be able to ask him more questions here and even keep him responsible if something doesn't work on my side, lol, kidding.
