September 1, 201213 yr Hi All, I downloaded the Xplane demo and flew the 747 from KSEA after stumbling thru the setup to try to give me some sort of a recognition of controls to what I have been flying for years, that being MS FS. My question is, Is the demo of X PLane 10 a real illustration of what the product is or is there more to the sim l will see from the full version? The demo as I have downloaded and flown is not a game changer for me. The scenery is woeful from the KSEA area and the model of the 747 and graphics are not going to get me to even consider making the switch to X-Plane. I am not trying to insult anyone or trying to put the product down, I am just relaying my first impressions and looking for someone to tell me the real deal with X-Plane. I am currently flying FSX and have used Prepar3d. I have a number of high quality FSX addons and I see that X-PLane is making inroads with a lot of the developers that would influence a decision to go to X Plane and continuing problems with FSX and CSOD's and BSod's that are taking a toll on my enjoyment from using that sim are leading me to look for another platform. I really am quite satisfied with the devs and choice of addons for FSX but the inherent problems of the FSX engine is a deal breaker for me and I am now looking at X-Plane and some comments from users as to the merits of the sim. Thanks for reading and sorry if this has been covered before. Skip Ciman
September 1, 201213 yr Basically, if someone has invested a lot in FSX, just as I did in the past, and is satisfied with what she/he gets from it, then all I can suggest, after having myself tried LM P3D last week (1 month subscription) is... go for LM P3D - it is worth the change, and with time solutions for porting your best add-ons to that platform will certainly become available. FSX, and now P3D are great simulation platforms! Now, in my case I am specially concerned with flight physics, weather, environment aspects pertaining to what is important for instance for VFR, or IFR in RL. Systems modelling is also important to me. The default "heavy metal" in X-Plane fall short from representing what the sim can really offer, and we will soon find out with the triple seven. The CRJ-200 and other detailed turboprops are also great examples of the level of detail / accuracy that can be achieved with X-Plane. And of course, I can't forget that great LES dc-3 - my preferred X-Plane10 aircraft :-) Using just the default aircraft, might I suggest that you compare the Baron58 and the C90 with the FSX/P3D Baron58, B200 (not the same as the C90, I know...)? Try it, and you will most certainly get why I am feeling so well with this simulator. The only aircraft in the default hangar I have flown in RL is the AS-K21, and it's close to real, down to the tricky sideslip/forward slip maneuver when full rudder is used, the stall, and even the spin! I understand your uncertainty... I felt it for a long time, until I finally learned to appreciate the real "taste" of X-Plane10, and that is why P3D lasted a few hours only on my disk, after last month having bought back FSX Gold and tweaked ti to the limits... All I can say is that after setting X-Plane10 properly to your hardware, it will be very difficult to get back... Is X-Plane10 perfect? Nooooooooooo no way! Does it have a future? Yessssssssss it has, and a bright one IMO. Can you expect the same from FSX ? No matter what add-ons will still be added, the core will never get past what it is now... Maybe LM P3D 2.0 can chnage things, but until then, I'd rather enjoy what X-Plane10 already offers me, instead of dreaming of things that I really don't have the slightest idea how/when will be real! Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
September 1, 201213 yr Once I started RL training, I also gravitated toward XPX as it became less about the immersion, but more on what should I expect on my next flight.
September 1, 201213 yr Yeah.. I think anyone who has flown a little in real life would perhaps like the more life like physics of X-Plane. I agree, FSX and P3D have some great features and are great sims! XP is just different and IMO model closer what it's like to fly in real life. :-)
September 4, 201213 yr Author Hi Again, Thank you for the comments about X Plane 10. I have no use for a sim as a training tool, as I have no RL experience nor do I anticipate needing any. I do value the "real experience" of a sim as explained by the people that know, and have the RL qualifications to back up their comments. And having an enormous interest in the aviation world both commercial and military, it is always somewhat satisfying to be able to at least on a sim, in your own place of residence, to experience some of the thrill of flying. So if the comments indicate that this is a most realistic sim, than I guess you can count me in. I have spent $70.00 many times and have had nothing to show for it. At least I will have a stack of dvd's for this money. I do enjoy the eye candy and I did not hear any mention of that from anyone, but I will see for myself in a week or so when the discs get here. I know REX is available and that is a good place to start. Thanks again for the replies. Skip Ciman
