How to "Clean Install" Nvidia Drivers

I think this guide might be useful for AMD users. I have some nVidia GPUs on the way and want to clear out the notoriously hard to eliminate AMD/ATI stuff on my system.

As soon as the cards are in I will attempt this procedure and see what I get.

Thanks again Ben.

Which cards did you end up getting? :Nerd:

Ben,

I ended up getting 2 EVGA GTX 680 FTWs.

Also ended up getting the wife an ASUS ROG Maximus Gene V z77 motherboard and a 3570K to upgrade her work rig. Both should be here next week and I'll update the hardware board with pics and begin pleading for help from you and Word Not Allowed on how to tweak FSX to run with these cards.

Goodness gracious... You could run 40 monitors without a drop in FPS! :LMAO:

Lol...hope so.

Now I'm going to need a crack team of nVidia GPU pros to help me tweak those beasts.

Used to do all this cleaning and cleaning....However, as was said earlier, with Windows 64, and the new NVidia drivers, there is NO need to go through these painstaking and potentially dangerous steps to install new drivers. New drivers clean old drivers and install without any issues.

Let me make this clear:

This guide is mainly for users who have troubles with drivers and or are in the process of switching GPUs etc.

"Nothing succeeds like excess".

My mentality when building my next Haswell system! :LMAO:

I have Win 7 64 and I continously have issues.

When unsintall and sweep and all that good stuff Aero is disabled and FSX says my card (580GTX) isn't good enough to run FSX...

So yes, there are some of us out there who DO have issues with nVidia's drivers.

Bens method is actually the correct way to update your drivers, this is stated now on the Nvidia website. That is to uninstall through Programs and features in control panel first. Yes, they keep changing their minds.

They obviously changed the method as people were having problems.

Another issue that I have come across repeatedly, and happens from time to time, is it still doesn't work properly and your Aero themes get disabled.

To fix this, go into Device manager, expand displays, next, go to the task bar and select 'show hidden devices, (XP) or 'show all devices'.

What you may find is multiple entries for your video card (s).

If so, you must either disable the extra entries and leave only one for each card you have, or as I do, remove all of them, don't worry, next time you reboot the computer, windows will recognise the new card and prompt to install drivers.

Then go back to Device manager and check there is only one entry for each card.

So if your Aero is disabled following driver update, This should be checked.

hope this helps,

Ron.

Just to add, As I am unable to edit my own post for some strange reason.

having muliple entries in Device manager can also cause you to get that weird message when updating drivers.

"Your card does not meet all the requirements for running this application" etc. etc.

Aero and programs like FSX require hardware acceleration to work properly, the program looks for the device that holds it.

If it finds multiple devices, it cannot decide which one to use and so it chooses none, then you get the error.

It's not the only reason, but worth checking before tearing your hair out.

Ron.

I do what Ben has written, but for Step 5, I reboot into Safe mode and then run Driver Sweeper from the Safe boot of Windows. I read somewhere rebooting in Safe mode prevents any left over driver files from restarting or reloading into the OS before you can sweep them out.
