Hi All

Just wondring when would you use these controls, near the auto brake control.Normally the FMC sets these for you.

Thank you.

Qas - I'm no expert here but would it be you would use the N1 if you needed to limit engine power and the speed if you were given a speed restriction/instruction by ATC that differs from that which would be instructed by the FMC.

No doubt someone with way more knowledge will be along with a proper answer for you in due course and in the process I will gain some more knowledge too.

I'm no expert as well but i disagree. Normally teh n1 limits and the V-Speeds are controlled through the FMC. However using these controls above the Upper DU you can set both the N1 limits and V-Speeds (V1, VR, V2, VREF) manually - "Overriding" the FMC. I don't think it has anythong to do with ATC. Anything given by ATC would be executed through the MCP or via the CDU.

Is it possible they are there in case the FMC is not available for use?

That's the primary reason. It can also be used to aid in setting N1s during a Cutback, a la SNA.

Not sure what you mean by "during a Cutback", do you mean for noise abatement reasons?

Quiet climb - type of the noise abatement procedures. For example NZAA, procedures C and D.

FMC fail and for Cutback noise abatement is the answer. The N1 button is used if you want to reduce to Climb Power without selecting a new vertical mode.
