The best option to solve my RAM problem in Apple?

Featured Replies

Running FSX in BootCamp under Windows 7 32 bit I only get 2.3 maximum Ram Memory ( I have 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3)

The specs are:

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53

Which would be the best option?

1.Install Windows 7 64 bit

2.Install the new Windows 8 64 bit

You can employ the \3GB switch so that fsx can see more than 2GB but not sure how that is done with Apple. May not be possible.

I would install Windows 7 64 bit. You'll get access to 4GB of memory and any memory left over will be used for your system.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Firehawk.........my thanks to you and benniehanas for your prompt responses.

In the light of both you both noting that Windows 7 would be the route to take I'm interested to know why you've chosen version 7 over Version 8?

Wow! There's a version 8 out? LOL. Version 8 is a new OS and, until it is proven to be better than Windows 7, I'm not recommending going to Version 8.

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Cliff,

I run FSX on the same machine as you (mid-2011 BTO 27 iMac) and use WIn7 x64. If I had to buy a new Windows license today I would probably wait a few days/weeks until Windows 8, since many here have stated that it works well with FSX and it's just a matter of future proofing. I also think that if you have a Windows 7 license you can upgrade for reasonable fee rather then buying an entirely new licence.

The one thing to consider though is the fact that Apple's Bootcamp drivers might not be ready for Windows 8, and there may be some wait before they are. Macrumors.com or the Apple forums would be your best bet to research that.

Cheers,

Alex

i would suggest staying with Windows 7 until a flood of users report that Windows 8 works better for FSX, expecially running under Bootcamp!

Many Windows users have learned from experience and sharing that many early adopters of new Windows versions are plagued by various issues from bugs, un-updated drivers, etc, so going straight to Windows 8 (i.e., when Bootcamp will support it and I'm guessing maybe not yet but haven't checked) may not be very wise. Win 7 is proven and 64bit solves your memory troubles. Win 7 will be supported (i.e., security updates will continue to be available, after which you can still obtain/install the latest and final service pack) until 2020, and even then you will be able to run it fine. So, if you kept ONLY Win 7 for your OS for running FSX w/, that is all you will ever need until something like P3D comes along and decides to write new code not supported by Win 7.
