FSX Dream Machine

Featured Replies

Its time to build a new PC! Black friday and cyber monday are a comin'

Currently, I have FSX running better than ever with REX, GEX, UTX and PMDG 737 NGX.

I am getting very good frame rates (over 24fps) in all synarios, setup as per NickN instructions.

Out of my current setup:

i720 at 4.2 ghz

GTX 580 (2 of them not that that matters)

8gig of ram at 1600mhz

All on a gigabyte X58 UD7 version 2

I also have a Koolance liquid cooling system for the CPU, A SilverStone !000watts PSU and a great lian-li case. Also a couple of raptors 600 for FSX and 300 for OS

I have seen spectacular FSX vids in youtube and am suffering from penis envy!

I plan to build a 5ghz plus machine by replacing my CPU, Motherboard, GPU and RAM.

Budget is no object (sorry, Yes I am rich but I worked hard to get it)

I have read recently that the previous batch of Intel processors are better than the latest?

given that I already have 2 x GTX 580 is it worth getting the 680?

Suggestions for building the FSX dream machine please.

CPU?

MotherBoard?

RAM?

GPU?

Thanks

I know they say gpu power means very little in FSX… but I would love to see what a GTX690 would do.

GTX 690? I didn't even know that existed! In belive that GPU does matter. Nothing like the CPU power but matters nevertheless. My first thought is CPU. I am thinking 3xxx but I read 2xxx is justr as good and way cheaper! After that MB and ram. I will upgrade the GTX580 but thats last on the list.

BTW great Air lingus thumb nail!

My recommended specs for a PC which will eat FSX for breakfast:

CPU: i5 3570K and OC it to ~5GHz with a custom water-cooling kit.

Graphics: I see no need for a replacement. Just re-use your old 580s. Unless you're playing BF3 on 3 monitors with 3D vision.

Mobo: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO

RAM: I see no need to replace that too. Upgrading from 8GB will make no difference whatsoever.

What's your job? I want to be as rich as you. ^_^

If money is no object, highly recommend a system from Digital Storm. Extremely customizable ( to fit all types of budgets ), unmatched build quality and fabulous service. I have one for a year and it was shipped to me in India from California.

Opps! Sorry for posting in the wrong place. I am completely useless!

Anyway you don't get a big budget throwing money around!

FYI, If you want to be well off start your own business and make it successful.

No more working for the man, be the man.

The resident Guru over at SimForum is currently recommeding this mem:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096&Tpk=N82E16820147096

It is Dirt cheap and apparently super overclockable.

Anyway I think I will give black friday and cyber monday a miss.

Same Guru says he is waiting for the GTX 780 for his next build.

Something to do with PCIE 3.0

And then there is ofcourse P3D 2.0 anticipated around the same time.

I think I will try to get 4.5 out of my i7 920 in the meantime.

I got 4.2 without even trying.

But thanks for the suggestions. I will keep all of that in mind for the spring.

Its hard knowing when to stop trying to upgrade and improve this sim but if its running good maybe you should leave it.

I’m personally not changing any hardware until the Haswell or Broadwell CPU’s are released. They could be a complete game changer

I agree with westman, the machine he suggested is what I would build if I were building now. And a good PSU, about 850w.

Gone through that, I suggest you also take a look in my guide, which will tell you how to set up FSX and which hardware is right. Can be found here.

So I just throw caution to the wind and brought to bear my very limited OCing knowledge on my current system and pushed it up to 4.61ghz from 4.2ghz by increasing the multiplier to 21 x 220 and the voltage to 1.475. I ran for about 5 mins. I played back an FSrecorder file and watched my PMDG 737NGX Pushback, Taxi and take off before it crashed to BSOD. Very close my target of 5ghz.

With some work I can make this work. Thanks for the great cmments.
