November 12, 201213 yr Hi. Can you guys please explain why most cargo operators keep Jurassic aircraft while others (Passengers Operators) replace their older aircraft with more fuel efficient ones? Take Fedex as an example. They are still operating 727, DC 10 and MD 11 despite their future plan getting newer planes. They still operate more than 60 DC 10s, 50 MD 11s and 33 727s http://www.planespotters.net/Airline/Federal-Express-%28FedEx%29. Is fuel efficiency not a major concern for cargo operation? I really want to understand the logic behind this. In addition, as SAS is retiring their MD 80's, the first converted MD 82 (ex SAS) has been delivered to its operator. Thanks Respectfully
November 12, 201213 yr They're cheaper to buy, and as Cargo aircraft spend less hours in the air, they can afford this due to the lower frame cost, if I understand correctly, if you bought a brand new freighter aircraft, they'd need to spend over 14 hours in the air every day to get enough utilisation to pay for their ownership costs. Secondly, cargo isn't as price sensitive as passenger flights, so efficient planes aren't the be all and end all. Thirdly, cargo doesn't care if they fly in old rust buckets, human passengers do.. November 12, 201213 yr I will just jump in and say I will miss those 727's when they eventually retire. Too bad Australia banned them, I don't get to see many in the Southern Hemisphere anymore. Good thing for Cargo Ops because otherwise all of those magnificent beasts would have retired long ago. Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me
November 14, 201213 yr Did you know how you can tell if that Captain in front of you flies cargo or passengers (they have cargo too)? Yes, you've guessed it, the moustache. :Nerd:
