November 22, 201213 yr Verry true Bimmer, I get away with a lot more than average because of running 2 580's in SLI mode with a 2600 processor and water cooled. Today I ordered a 2700K along with Corsair HIGH performance memory. CPU and GPU must be in balance or you will have issues. Also I will overclock the processor. Another issues are processes that you have running in the backround. If you can shut down the un-needed process's you will gain on FSX. Think of your rig as a fine tuned race car. You wouldn't install a HEMI ingine under the hood with a K-MART rear end... Until everyone comes to this conclussion there will always be an issue with DX10. I run DX10 and am loving it, but always like more!! So I have opt to up grade my system even more. In FSX there is no over kill in my opinion. Les lh
November 22, 201213 yr I can say that because FSX runs quite well at 4.2 or 4.4 GHz which I consider pretty safe overclocks. I only said that because the OP indicated he wanted to upgrade his GPU and I saw no need for it. IMHO 4.9GHz is definitely not too much for FSX but I consider it to be too much. I frequent the CTD Forum here a lot and there's a lot of probable causes there. Of course, if you are a computer expert and really know what you are doing (as far as voltages and cooling), then there should be no problem. A lot of flight simmers have had their systems overclocked to 5.0 and I think there are some still around. But why? Why overclock a system to almost the max of its capabilities and risk destruction of your system? It doesn't make sense to me. Best regards, Jim 4.2 or 4.4GHz are very safe overclocks like You said, and fsx work's well at that clocks if you fly GA aircrafts, or less complex airliners. But it's definitely not enough if you fly complex airliners. PMDG, Maddog, Level D etc. Than again, about GPU - 560ti is ok if you are not using HD textures and REX clouds. My 560ti works well most of time, but in the bad weather+NGX+Big bussy addon airport - 560ti is really struggling, i get a big FPS drop and stutters. I have locked my fps to 30 and i have 30fps most of time. But i'm talking about for example - Approaching Aerosoft EHAM in bad weather using NGX with REX, AS2012 etc. So, this is the reason that i need high overclock, more than 4.4GHz and i need better GPU. With Nvidia 580 you don't have such a big problems in bad weather. If i use QW RJ100 for example, or Real Air Duke - fps are rock stable at 30, but with NGX fps can drop below 20, which means stutters. And i use PMDG NGX, MD11 and Maddog most of time Zeljko Budovic
November 22, 201213 yr But it's definitely not enough if you fly complex airliners. PMDG, Maddog, Level D etc. Where did you find this information? Look at the minimum specs for a PMDG, LevelD, iFly, or whatever product. I seriously doubt an upgrade of your GPU is going to give your better fps and/or get rid of stutters. Have you tried the unlimited fps setting? That's what I use and I only have small issues when in some commercial airport areas in bad weather. Otherwise my fps stay above 40. My system is overclocked to 4.4GHz. A GTX580 will allow you to turn up the detail and maybe get a higher resolution but that will be about it. If you have a lot of money for a 580, go for it but you might want to spend just a few more dollars and get the GTX 680 or even a lot more for the GTX690 w/4GB memory. November 22, 201213 yr Good morning all and Happy Thanksgiving to all :yahoo: Yesterday I made a post on what I was purchasing for my upgrade. While not thinking much I really didn't say why I was doing so. The reason for the updates are; I run alot of scenery add-ons and also PMDG aircraft. The scenery, Rex full weather and you name it, Here is my reason for the updates to the system. If I was to only run the default aircraft and the single prop planes along with the load that I already have, my FR are hitting right at 30. If I run the PMDG planes with everything the FR then drop below 20 and then up and down and that is not what you want. FSX runs a whole lot better with stable FR's. I want to run all the add-ons that I have paid hard money for; or why purchase them. I don't run PMDG at minumum specs and if I did run them at minumum specs why waste the money? They are high tech graphically planes as close to the real plane as you can get without beeing in the full scale. I haven't went in to the BIOS and changed anything as far as overclocking; that is next. I also run a short program called "core temp" ( temps are well in the specs of Intel) which tells me the temp of each core plus the processor speed that I am running while flying, and the processor runs right at 4.1 to 4.4 which is fine for the small planes but not good enough for the PMDG or the more highly detailed planes on the market and for those that are on their way. In my opinion this is why everyone is looking at overclocking and updateing their rigs. I will give you some insight on where I have come from. I started flying Sims way back in the 80.s. :yahoo: and loved it. Through the years flight simming evolved to what it is today and will be tomorrow even better which will require more horse power in the CPU case if you want to fly more realistic and flying the high tech planes. So, I have seen the extreamly poor graphics from the beginning and I have seen the excellent graphics of today. Call it eye candy or whatever, but I love my sweets :yahoo: In closeig if I could afford a full blown 747 simulator that they would train full scale pilots in I would purchase one... that idea is far out of the question. :( Les :hi: lh

Best regards, Jim I tried myself, minimum specs means that you must move most off fsx sliders to the left. You can run anything that way. I used fsx with e7200 @2.53GHz and PMDG work's well with a lot of graphics sacrifice. Now i have 2700K @4.9GHz and i want to get smooth sim with nice graphics. I folowed Word Not Allowed Guide with excelent results, i never had better and smoother fsx. The only problem that i have is with bad weather, becouse of GPU. I tried DX10 becouse of that. Also, this is the quote from Word Not Allowed's FSX guide: "Beware that using 4096 clouds with high levels of Anti Aliasing like SGSS is going to kill the GPUs, especially 560Ti. Even my overclocked GTX 580 is being extremely hammered by such high resolutions and IQ. I am currently using 2048 clouds, as they offer a good inbetween." I tried unlimited settings, i tried almost everything with fsx. The best things for me is 1/2 refresh rate with locked fps(internal limiter) Zeljko Budovic
