December 18, 201213 yr can someone please tell me approximetly how good FSX will run on this laptop please? its the best i could do with the price and i cant get a desktop because i travel frequently. Also, sorry if this is in the wrong section feel free to move it, im still getting to grips with the place. http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/lenovo-z580-15-6-laptop-grey-17056582-pdt.html p.s. sorry i posted in multiplayer forum
December 18, 201213 yr Hi, Very poorly - it has integrated graphics. A desktop for the same price would perform far better. Does it absolutely have to be portable?

December 18, 201213 yr Are you able to increase the budget? And also, do you plan to use high end addons like the NGX?
December 18, 201213 yr I think in your case i.e. living in the U.K.,the prices for a suitable notebook are skyhigh compared to North America. I was comparing prices from Dell.ca and Dell.uk for **ienware products,or ones with similar specs. Unfortunately with your budget, most of these are out of reach. Ron Ron Service .
December 18, 201213 yr Honestly- I can run the NGX at a UK2000 airport in FTX England with no AI traffic smoothly, on my hardworking Acer aspire 5552 which I got on sale at simplyacer for less than £300. I've even got quite a lot of long haul done on my laptop (though it usually looks like its going to blow up by the end of the flight). Will Torrens

December 19, 201213 yr The specs are good but the cooling fans doesn't seem big, so your lappy will overheat because FSX is CPU demanding. Consider an used Asus G73(or better) Gaming Laptop 17" , I've got mine over-clocked to 3,3 GHz, with massive cooling fans, runs FSX, REX(HD2048 clouds), NGX, FS2CREW, VATSIM etc.with no problem 20-30 fps, of course I don't have all sliders to the right when flying NGX. I can put them all to the right when flying low fps demanding addons:) do a search hare you'll find allot infos on laptops...good luck! Kind regardsR.G
December 19, 201213 yr I think we must have very different ideas of smoothly! Agreed. Everyones idea of smooth must very greatly. After days of tweaking FSX doesn't run smooth on my PC.
December 19, 201213 yr Your biggest challenge will be heat and that display card. I run FSX with a bunch of add-on's on a Lenovo W510 with a significantly slower CPU than the machine you're looking at and it runs ok, not great. I have done many 5 or 6 hour flights in the MD-11 and shorter (2 or 3 hour) flights with the NGX with no problem. I did have to tweak it like hell to get it stable and reliable and still heavy REX clouds will bring it to its knees. Heat is also a major issue but a Thermaltake cooling pad and external USB fan do help in that area. I also cleaned the factory heat sink compound off the CPU and nVidia GPU and replaced it with Arctic Silver heat sink compound which also helped. Not sure if you'll want to do that as it will void your warranty. Another thing to consider is keeping the heat sink clean of dust. I clean mine every two weeks but that means disassembling the laptop to get the heat sink out. Again, this will probably void your warranty. If you must use a laptop, get a good cooling pad and lots of can air so you can keep the heat sink clear of dust. December 19, 201213 yr Author Im not looking to run any high end add on's just free add on aircraft and AI traffic and some small scenery. its the best i can do with my budget i just hope it will run without sticking.
December 19, 201213 yr The specs are good but the cooling fans doesn't seem big, so your lappy will overheat because FSX is CPU demanding. Consider an used Asus G73(or better) Gaming Laptop 17" +1 on what Robert said. I spend over 260 nights a year in a hotel, so a desktop is out of the question. FSX cures my boredom on the road. I have an ASUS G74SX laptop and get identical results with many similar addons. It's a horse and well worth it. I know you have a set budget, but if possible aim a little higher to allow for more flexibility. I purchased mine from Tiger Direct and the service was great. Here's a link to a newer G75 model with a GTX 670M video card. http://www.tigerdire...&Sku=A50-173406 For $200 cheaper there's a G75 with a GTX 660M. These ASUS machines run as cool as a cucumber even under high loads. I always love TSA's reaction when I go through security with my laptop, throttle quadrant and joystick. Chris Sunseri
December 19, 201213 yr First off, Lenovo makes a great laptop - used in the International Space Station as a matter of fact - but your GPU here is easily your bottleneck. I use a Lenovo W510 that seems to tackle FSX relatively well with the proper tweaks. I don't shoot for anything past 30FPS, but it gets my hours in. Lenovo is quality. They build a solid laptop that will take any abuse you throw at it, but that GPU is going to cause you issues the same as my Quadro model GPU causes me issues. For the money you're prepared to spend I would look elsewhere.
December 19, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the feedback guys, im open to suggestions but my budget is around £550 but i might be able to push it a little higher but not greatly.
