Live News....Fears for Australian pilot as difficult landing looms

Featured Replies

Hope it turns out all right for this Trainee Pilot...Probably he's going to 'white knuckle' the landing:

A trainee pilot in Australia is trying to make an emergency landing on two wheels at a small airport in Victoria's north after he lost a wheel during take off.

The 21-year-old pilot is circling above Mangalore Airport, about 120 kilometres north of Melbourne, in an effort to burn enough fuel to attempt the landing.

An airport spokesman said he expected the pilot would attempt to land this afternoon.

He said pilots had successfully landed on two wheels before but that it was very difficult to do so. Normally pilots would have three wheels when landing a light plane.

Emergency crews, including a fire truck, are on standby at the airport.

He made it OK, but the reports say he was 'a little shaken'.....Looks like from the picture a rear wheel came off

Congratulations to the pilot for keeping calm and landing successfully!

It is interesting that the reporters published this story while he was still in the air—I would imagine that general aviation crises/incidents such as this one would not normally attract so much attention in such an immediate and short time frame.

Good news.

He should have no problem passing his tests now haha

Fantastic turnout.

He did a great job staying calm too.

Thanks,

Kevin L
