The rise of the X-Plane forum

Featured Replies

I've been watching and reading this forum regularly since Xplane10 first came out. I'm mightily impressed with how much more popular this sub-forum has become. I remember early last year that posts seem to average out at about three per day - with an occasional burst of activity around major X-plane news.

Now looking that the posts there hasn't been any major x-plane news for some time, but the post activity is much higher on the X-Plane sub-forum these days. I've given up counting the number of posts for today and yesterday, but there's plenty of topics to engage discussion in. If I was an x-plane developer I'd find this rather heartening.

Agreed, and I think this has happened mainly due to the improvements we've seen in v10.20.

Isn't it like 1 discussion spawning over a lot of threads for more than a year now with always the same 3-5 people engaged exchanging the ever same arguments without ever reaching a result? :D

Yes, and who's fault is that? Certainly not the end user who is crying out, wishing / praying that things will get better / changed / resolved, whatever you want to call it, all for making this simulator, a "complete simulator".

It has plodded along in the same direction, on the same highway, far too long. It's time to change direction 180 degrees, and move towards a path of success, instead of just one man's vision, and always falling just a bit short. We are here to tell him what we want, what will make Xplane successful as far as a complete simulator goes. If nobody speaks up, nobody at the other end will ever know. It's been 20 years, and he hasn't figured it out yet, and probably never will without outside help. And the outside help won't come until he changes. Are they here now, filling the gaps, no.

Some here think once Xplane is out of Beta they will come. Xplane is never out of Beta (wake up people). It needs to "truly" be out of Beta, as in, ok this is Xplane, we'll be back in three years (whatever time frame you choose, but there needs to be a lengthy one) with another version. Then the developers might think of coming along for the ride.

The move to 64bit was a huge leap, a great start, but there is so much more to do / finish. He's not capable of doing it, we've seen that. Rattle some chains, hopefully change will come, the 3rd party developers will see the merits of "jumping" on board, and Xplane will finally, finally, be a complete simulator.

The foundation is there, it's been there for years, it just needs to be finished. He can't do it alone, that we know from past / current precedence. If he could, we wouldn't be talking about it.

When was the last time he responded here?

Well said. What I miss most, is complete scenery. we have good photoscenery here, perfect OSM coverage there. Add a masterpiece of an add on airport, or a nice skyline, but it is not complete. What can I do, flying patterns arround my scenery highlines? I want to simulate flights, from take off to parking at the destination. And no "if you want that, then XP is not for you". What world wide scenery is worth, if it looks all the same.

When was the last time he responded here?

True enough, this may be a stretch but you'll get the point.

When was the last time your "countrie/s of choice" leader, or perhaps local politician, responded to you? Probably never, but speak loud enough and they "will" hear you. If they don't listen, they won't be in power for too long. Same applies to Xplane, although it's never been the "leader". Here's to hoping it is, start listening, to the people, the end users.

Well I mentioned here at the start of 10 that the manifold pressure gauge worked incorrectly and somehow it was fixed at the next patch. It is nice to have an active forum here, and one that allows true discussion because that does ultimately cause improvement. I would think everyone would want that.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Ben explicitly states often enough that they ignore most forums stuff and concentrate on bug reports and those priorities first. You may have mentioned it here, but surely enough it wasn't the source for it beeing fixed.

The themes here show no variation: Goran vs. LAdamson, aircraft rolls left, fsx flies on rails, aircraft trim won't work, xplane is a moving target, wow you can do cool stuff with OSM, Goran vs. LAdamson, aircraft rolls right, night lightning is good, clouds are not, regional autgen is needed, xplane is always beta, Carenado planes aren't that bad, default ones are, the DC3 by Goran is nice even LAdamson admits it, turbulence is way overdone, wait! now it's fixed, ups no it's not, Blade Element Theory is in no way better than lookup tables, what? wrong!, I am so sad there is no EZ/REX/ORBX/PMDG otherwise I would immediately, yet another Goran vs. LAdamson, now tkyler has a say, is that the only employee? boy they need more people on board, …

P.S. I am really only complaining because I know what AVSIM can be, too. I experienced it completely different in the days of FLY!. What a helpful place that was. We made that worldwide CD shipping exchange, had all a bunch of really practical tips for that crazy settings file the sim had. And as a major difference of course: The developer himself was really involved, so that it actually made sense to put the complaints and wishes on the table.

This X-Plane forum has no practical use whatsoever. No files, no constructive informations, only those ever old issues that yield nowhere. Sorry to say that.

Actually Tkyler talked to me directly here on the forum about the manifold gauge as he did the default Baron the other day which is also getting a patch.

Sorry you are against improving things-not good for any sim, but as more and more embrace xplane the good old boys club will just have to move with the times, or go back and huddle at the org.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

I'm all for improving this sim. I'm complaining about the attitudes shown in this forum. My criticisms are also publicly out there, as well as my bug reports on payware pruducts. But as it stands, this here is not the place that get's me involved with real issues or practical help. And I'm really sorry to say that, especially because of the P.S. I added to my answer one above.

Actually there is very constructive information-to those that want to listen.

I would not be wasting my time here if I thought no one was listening. Differently from the past it seems there is some dialog going on.

Do you not think it is important for the person who makes the default Baron to know that there is no rudder/aileron trim used/needed for level flight or that the manifold gauge in the first release did not lose an inch for every 1000 ft ?

You call it negative-I call it positive, but yes perhaps the org is a better place for you to hang out.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

No, that's not what I call negative, wich should really be obvious. I named the examples. And from some point on, they come to the table in simply every thread. Just how often can people go in circles like that? There is no practical use in discussing X-Plane development circles aka the betas after every new beta. Developers like Goran and Tkyler already layed out that it is not really a moving target so much like some people perceive it. However, it is still used as one of the main arguments. That's the non-practical stuff I am talking about that simply gets more than boring, I'd say annoying, after reading it for way more than a year.

...and they should-especially if information that is not helpful to the sim moving forward is missing or being misrepresented or debated.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

We have all the major stuff put together, have we not:

- seasons

- better/moving clouds

- better ATC

- implement the promised system of crowd-sourced airports

- lay out a roadmap for OSM and terrain updates (rivers! rivers!)

- make it 64bit final asap

- finish WED

- keep improving the default planes

- more autogen: cities improve slowly, industrial is completely lacking

- more HD terrain textures. Still not even finished for the world! Some place use XP9 textures until today.

- try to imrpove performance further so that more people can use HDR

- and so on

Maybe the problem is that most people, even exclusive X-Plane users like myself, agree on those issues. So what's left to debate it Lookup vs. Blade Element, even if it's in thread no. 1000 dealing with that same debate.
