Windows8 and FSX

Featured Replies

Morning,

Spent most of the evening while sitting here re-installing FSX on my new Asus 76GV....anyway, I unistalled it after a rash of unexpected fatal errors occured. After installing everything, discovered that anytime I bring the knee board up in any model, FSX crashes. Is this some sort of compatability issue with Win8 or is something else going on. As long as I don't bring up the knee board, everything hums along fine.

Thanks,

Mark

I'm not getting the kneeboard problem but since I changed over to Win8 I'm getting a lot more CTDs and my ProFlight Yolk and X52Pro are vanishing after a few minutes of flight so I have to save my position and reload. It's all very annoying and there has been a lot of discussion here and elsewhere about it.

Whether it's a Win8 problem or not it certainly seems like some kind if incompatibility.

Downloaded and added that DLL file to my FSX root directory and flew all night this night without any CTD issues. I am crossing my fingers and will be re-installing FSPS Physics add-on tomorrow. But in the mean time- thanks- great tip and I thank you for it.

I do think it's due to compatibility issues. FSX was designed for XP, not Windows 8. Microsoft really didn't keep FSX in mind when developing Windows 8. Right now it seems, FSX is really unstable according to many people, lots of CTDs. I'm sure the joystick problem is going to be fixed considering it's not FSX related but I wouldn't keep my hopes high about any improvements/fixes regarding the stability of FSX in Windows 8.

FSX runs like a champ for me in Win8...i can say that for me, it runs better now than it ever did in Win7. The UIautomationcore.dll needs to be in your root FSX folder and then all is good as far as CTD's go.

Thanks! Hope it's still working for you after the physics add-on.

Yeah. Me too. I think the thing that frustrates me the most is I finally have the hardware to get the full potential out of FSX and still, plagued by CTD issues! But, so far so good.

Not true. XP was the OS when FSX was released but it actually was developed with Vista. That's why I immediately upgraded to Vista after FSX was released. It is backwards compatible with XP. Vista is very similar to Windows 7 with a bunch of bugs fixed. As I recall, DX10 was introduced with Vista and that's why the Aces Team tried to program FSX for use with DX10. DX10 looked really promising back then but the team failed to make it fully compatible. So I think FSX is in the right ball park but I'm not sure about Windows 8. Although FSX/Acceleration may work okay with Windows 8, some of the addons may not be fully compatible.

Best regards,

Jim

I'm not sure this is actually true - FSX came out in October of 2006 and Vista came out in January 2007. FSX was clearly in development for a long time prior to Oct 2006 and I kinda doubt they were developing it on an alpha or beta OS. Also consider the fact that FSX has numerous problems to this day with UAC and the permissions stuff within the Program Files and Program Files (x86) folder on Vista/7/8 and I'd bet almost anything it was primarily designed on XP. DX10 support wasn't added until SP2/Acceleration over a year after FSX's initial release - we all know it's not a full implementation either and it still does strange things like the afforementioned UAC/permissions issues and disabling Aero. At best I think it exists in some no-man's land between XP and Vista...

I will try to find my Source Ryan. Your explanation makes a lot of sense but I considered my Source correct based on the fact that, for one, some people get Menu crashes unless the Vista version of the uiautomationcore.dll is located in the main FSX folder. I agree with you that it was probably developed with a little of both OS's used as I think Microsoft wanted to make sure it was compatible (like with the new texture .dds format). The disabling of Aero was done on purpose. Unfortunately I wasn't sitting behind one of those desks at the developer's offices so can't be totally positive (but I read a lot!). I think the very question was asked soon after the release to Phil, the lead developer. But the most telling evidence is on the box(es) that contained FSX... it clearly states you need Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista so they did have Vista in mind.

Best regards,

Jim
