CTD (not a seasonal one)

Featured Replies

Hello, since three days, I have a strange CTD around Orcas Island. The first time the CTD occured, when I flew from Sitka to Bremerton with my King Air. It occured when I started my descend. I got an error notification-> modname:unknown (nothing with terrain.cfg) The second time it occured I flew from Bremerton to Orcas Island with the Beaver. About 2nm before the landing on Orcas->CTDI have the Orcas Island scenery from FS Addon, but it makes no difference if it is installed or not.If I try to load a flight on Orcas Island the loading screen remains about 10 seconds on 0% and then I get the error notification from above.I tried to load at night but it's the same. So I think it isn't a seasonal CTD (I have the patch installed)I use FS Genesis Mesh, Landclass and US Roads. I tried to disable all of the sceneries I installed the days before but it doesn't work.(Mainly sceneries for Alaska)I can start from Victoria, Diamond Point and Vancouver without a problem. Today I managed to fly right above Orcas Island before the CTD ocurred. One thing, (I don't think it has anything to do with that) when I started in Vancouver (I chose "Active runway") my plane stood into the water, that never happened before....I have no clue what else I can do now. Any suggestions? Can it be an AFCAD issue?Regards Michael

Afcad is a good place to start. Might be a good idea to replace that Vancouver afcad. Also check for duplicate afcad files, this can cause problems as well. There is a utility called ScanAfd which will search and identify any duplicate afcad files.

hmmm, when I start ScanAfd I get the error "unable to find Addon Scenery directory in Scenery.cfg. PLease send a copy of your scenery.cfg file to the author at [email protected]"What is going wrong?ThanksRegards Michael

Sorry, I didn't get any errors when I ran the program. Maybe someone here ran into the same problem? Anyway, another way to look for duplicate afcads is to just use the Windows file search on your Flightsim directory for the airport code. For example, looking for Vancouver would be:*CYVR*.bglThat should return a list of all bgl files that have the airport code in it. These files might be afcad files.

I got it to work. It had something to do with the language of the sim. I have a german version of it. I simply renamed it in the scenery.cfgThe program found some duplicated ones (nothing for Vancouver)I deleted them. But nevertheless the problem is still there. Any other suggestions what to do?Regards Michael

Well, CTDs can be caused by bad afcad files as well. Or any addon scenery in the area. I had a similar problem with the FS Quality Austrian airports. It would crash in the same spot. Fortunately they put out a patch which fixed the problem. My only advice would be to remove any newer afcad files and recently added addon scenery. That Vancouver afcad that started you in the water might be a good place to start. You can probably assume that the addons like Orcas island are not the cause, as many people use them and don't have problems. There isn't much to do but take a guess and try removing scenery in the area. It can be frustrating, many of us have been there. Good luck.

thanks for your answers. Then I have to search....When I think about reinstalling the sim :-erksRegards Michael

MichaelDo a search here and at FlightSim forum for CTD, there is lots of good stuff on this, AFCAD duplication or internal errors can cause this, ATC control when you leave an airport and don't cancel landing intentions can cause this, it takes a bit of sleuthing. Somewhere there is a posting by Lee Swordy on the AFCAD issue. Are you using my latest Vancouver (CYVR4 and 4.1), the AFCAD file is built in and integral with scenery since the AFCAD shows the visible runways, taxiways etc - do you still have an earlier AFCAD installed elsewhere, if so it should be deleted - check the installation instructions.NigelVancouver

no, I havent't installed your scenery yet. But I will do so and delete the old AFCAD because it put me into the water one time I started from Vancouver....Regards Michael

  • 1 month later...

Sometimes mesh scenery or landclass scenery addons can cause CTDs. Try de-activating any recently applied meshes or LCs in the area.Lee

Howdy, just to add a tip for the problem hunt: Provided that you've placed all your add-on AFCADs in the same folder (typically FS9Addon SceneryScenery) the initial test would be to deactivate this folder in the Scenery Library and try again. If the CTD still occurs, it's not a faulty AFCAD (btw, ScanAFD does only test for duplicates not internal problems with AFCADs such as unconnected start positions). If the CTD is gone you'll have to hunt for the faulty AFCAD(s) with the 50-50 approach, i.e., re-activate the AFCAD directory, remove half of all US/Canadian AFCADs, then check again, split the remaining half with the faulty AFCAD(s) in two parts, etc.Good luck!Cheers, Holger
