That will be up to Avsim site management, and whatever they decide will be okay with me. I didn't bring up the political stuff, you did. It's but one element of a website that I'm proud to link to.

 

It's easy to attach labels to people and then reflexively play the tapes that go along with the labels. It's more difficult to open one's mind and listen to what they're actually saying, rather than to what you think they're saying.

 

If I get banned from Avsim, so be it. For better or worse I'm a freethinker, not a member of any group, and I don't try to hide who I am -- not for anybody and not for any reason. I like it here and hope that I'm welcome here -- but I never stay anyplace where I'm basically unwelcome.

 

EDIT: And if banned I'd still go to FANCON because there is still a story I want to cover. If refused entrance to FANCON that too would be part of the story, as will the long drives to and from the event.

Well now. Perhaps what I've written or am about to write will in fact get me banned. So be it. I don't pull punches for anyone.

I don't hate black people. In fact, I grew up in a family who worked very hard for civil rights for black people before it became fashionable, so to speak.

 

In 1948 we were run out of Jacksonville by the KKK, who had threatened my parents with death. From Jacksonville we moved to Peekskill, and my father was literally on stage with Paul Robeson the evening of the Peekskill riots. From Peekskill we moved back to NYC, the city of my birth. A frequent overnight guest in our small apartment in Little Italy was Leroy Hacker, a black WW2 Army colonel who was also active in the civil rights movement at a time when it was worth your life to care and be outspoken.

 

At boarding school in the mid-50s my roommate was Bobby Sengstacke, later the famous black civil rights photographer, son of the publisher of the Chicago Defender, a leading voice in the struggle for civil rights for black people. I've listened to black music all my life and have become friends with a young black man who works at a local Wal Mart because we both like funk music and we both play bass. (And because I know something of his religion, which is Ethiopian even though he is an American.)

EDIT: I have to add a thought. A well known columnist was fired by National Review Online because of an article he had written that ran on a different site. NRO's decision to fire the writer, John Derbyshire, was an understandable business decision.

 

Derbyshire didn't take it personally. However, I have no doubt that he would have written and published the offending article anyway even if he knew that NRO was going to fire him.

 

Similarly, if Avsim decides that it's in its best business interests to ban me, I will understand completely and also will not take it personally.

A footnote ...

 

My wife, a home health nurse, has many patients in the Denver black community. She never requests it but when such a visit is over she is invariably escorted back to her car if someone is available to do this.

 

When I told her about this spat she said "Look. Just do what everyone else does and say 'youth', not 'black'."

 

She's the only person on earth who can get me to make self censorship changes of that kind. Accordingly I have sanitized the Commentary section of my site. The word "black" no longer is to be found, only references to "youth gangs" and "feral youths". And these youths could be anyone, right? White, Asian, Jewish, Samoan, Latino, Salvadoran -- anyone.

No wonder every where this guy replies, he hijacks and derails the thread. And to think he was playing the victim all along. I guess now we know why FS pulled the plug on this joker and I hope AVSIM does the same too.

Hundred foot altitude steps seems to be working well. Sometimes I can do a two hundred foot step. (I'm approaching Iceland at FL322 with about 84,000 pounds of fuel aboard.)

 

EDIT: I made the changes to my site at my wife's request because she expressed a fear of getting fired from her job for something I had written or might write in the future. Since the message is the same using the word "youth", and since a slowly increasing number of people realize that the message is the same, I agreed to make the changes.

 

What a shame America has come to this. I thought that only in Canada could one be prosecuted for telling the truth. (I'm not kidding. Check out their hate speech laws. It is literally the case that truth is not a defense. The crime is injuring the feelings of others regardless of the reasonableness of those injured feelings.)

 

It's about to happen here, too, apparently.
