Expanding on my previous post, Fast or overclocked RAM usually comes at the expense of CAS latency. 1600 Mhz RAM with a CL value of 7, say, will probably be close in performance with faster RAM with a higher CL value (lower is better). I'm probably getting too far into the nuts and bolts of it. Anyway, if the PC builder is giving you a hard OC number and are guaranteeing it, all should be well. Generally, though, a 4 core CPU like the 3770K running at 5 Ghz will be comparable in performance with a 6 core CPU running at the same clock frequency.

2133 @ cl7 T1 can be close to 2400 cl10 T1, 2600 cl10 T1 way faster than 2133 cl 7,  1600 cl7 not close to 2400 cl10

There's a reason for that and it is that FSX is not designed to take advantage of mulitple GPUs.  The 690 has 2 GPUs on 1 card.  In order to fit those 2 GPUs on that 1 card within the power and thermal constraints they have chosen, it is necessary to run those 2 GPUs at a lower speed than the single GPU you find in the 680.  Add it all up and you have a card that is slower than the 680 in FSX.

Checked out that site PCspecialist.co.uk and they say "max 4,8" for the 3970X and "max 4,6" for the 3930K and so on, which leads me to believe the actual result may vary. I take for granted they do everything by the book regarding stress testing and monitoring core temperatures while they are working on that overclock. But even though the system is stable in stress tests it will not be certain that it is stable in FSX. FSX is the final test for a system. This means that even though you get the computer overclocked, now is a good time to read up on clocking the SB-E in case you need to change settings later on.

Thanks Xiter. Obviously until it's up and running in my study here we won't know. As you say stable as an overclock and stable in FSX is a different thing.

Either way, I'm confident it will do the job for what I need. 

Even if you get a golden chip, a 4,8 GHz overclock with 2400 MHz memory is not to be taken lightly. It may very well be possible, but it is a lot of money to spend on that memory to 'try and see'.

And while I'm at it, when you get the system, check your core temperatures and motherboard temperatures when stress testing to verify they are okay. I may be opening a can of worms here because everyone has it's own opinions about core temperatures but I make sure they stay at 80C or less when running OCCT 1hr CPU test and set it to a large data set.

No, I did not.

Well it's arrived. Early days yet and I'm yet to throw the NGX at it but early signs are VERY promising. Rex, Orbx and the NGX go on tomorrow.
