How do you plan for long hauls?

Featured Replies

What do you guys do to get ready for a long distance flight as far as flight planning goes? It's not hard for me to find a plan on flightaware or vroute if I'm doing a 2 hour flight, but longer distance flights are proving to be an issue.  I was going to do IAH-OMDB, but I can't find a route that works on 1304.

Thanks guys.

I prefered to use rfinder but I've tried to venture away from them since they no longer include sids or stars in their flight plans. Not sure why...

On another note, how do you like fsbuild?

Ah, that's what you mean about flightaware.com when you say "... proving to be an issue."  I interpreted as you could not find a route in flightaware.com for long haul type of flights.

1.  Not all flight plans on flightware.com are complete. In the case of "ELD3 ELD KM33K KI48O KC69U SYR KB03E YQX NATX ATSUR" it only goes from KIAH across the Atlantic on NATX to ATSUR.  The segment from there to OMDB is missing.

2.  When you say "Kept giving me "waypoint not found"..." regarding KM33K, do you mean the FSX flight planner?  If so, it could be because the waypoint was created after FSX was released and thus not in FSX's internals.  One way to use flight plans with these unrecognizable waypoints in FSX is to produce the flight plan using another tool besides the FSX flight planner.  One of those is SimRoutes.com.  There you can use its "Generate Routes" feature, enter the route, and then export as a FSX flight plan.  SimRoutes.com is more likely to recognize these points since their navigational information is more current than default FSX.  A second option is to go here and update your FSX navigational database, which I suggest either way.  This update may solve the waypoint-not-found problem with the FSX flight planner.

Two other sources of flight plans vroutes and vataware.com.  Vroutes has a freeware client problem you download and use to search for routes, and Vataware captures all the routes used by VATSIM pilots.  For example, doing a Vatware Citypair Search shows 10 flights between KIAH-OMDB.  The most recent used:

ELD3 ELD KM33K KI48O KC69U SYR KB87C TOPPS VIXUN LOGSU 4950N 5140N 5230N 5220N LIMRI XETBO CRK EVRIN UL607 MATUG RASPU UZ660 ROKEM UZ650 BERVA UM748 TEGRI UL605 BULEN L605 RIXEN UA17 BAG UL614 GEM UW73 DYB UP975 SIDAD R784 ORSAR DESDI DESD6C/30L

Hope this helps.

Also unless I'm mistaken the entering of NAT tracks is something of a tricky business in FMCs and can result in a error message. I usually take a completed route and enter it by hand, that way if a point doesn't work or something I only lose that point, not the entire saved flight plan.

That works too.  As an alternative, you can import the route into the FMC as a company route, then review it, leg by leg, for correctness.  For discontinuities, etc, you can correct in the FMC without loosing the entire route.  This saves the labor and the likelihood of introducing errors when entering each point manually.  But, some people, prefer to enter manually because it makes it more immersive and fun.

Hopefully one of these months PFPX gets released and then it's one stop shopping for all your flight planning needs :D
