You are absolutely correct. Just what I'd like to mention is about the CPU lifetime. True, most warranties are given for 3-5 years. However, it is not directly related to the CPU lifetime. I ran i7 860 2,8 GHz for 3 years at 3,9GHz and around 90-100c (yeah, didn't really save the chip) with FSX without any problems and now my friend is running it with factory settings. Works like a charm.

Like some people talk about the reduced lifetime, I'd like to know, what they are actually expecting to get. Overclocked CPU will last for years with good cooling and in normal use, most people will never reach the end of lifetime, even when overclocked.

Dude, I see you got big problem with the "!" in your keyboard.

I don't know why you should overclock. I didn't tell you to do it. I don't know about your friends but listening to everything your friends say and then coming here to share that as an absolute truth isn't right. They are not the only people knowing about computers. "Never OC if you cant afford to lose your HW" isn't really the whole truth. You could say "never start up the computer if you can't affort to lose your HW" and it is as true as your friends statement. Yes, all hardware will eventually fail but what is the starting lifetime and then the reduced lifetime. If you know what you are doing (normal person not trying to burn his/her CPU), in normal usage, you will never notice the reduced lifetime since when it finally ends, you haven't used it for years anymore.

Martin,

Second thing: some time ago I came across another person who mentioned that for some reason, some Nvidia GTX cards cannot interact with FSX in a certain way, which causes the cards to be barely used. I don't know how this works or why this would be the case, but I think my card could be one of those models, because when I switched to an ATI card I borrowed from a friend of mine with roughly the same specs as my Nvidia, I did see an increase in FPS.

Well, I bought a GTX 660TI a few months ago. I had a GTX285 before that. I thought there would be a big increase in FPS, but to my frustration there was non.

I don't want to hijack the thread but since we're on the topic of overclocking, I'm currently running my 2600K at 4.7ghz, would you guys recommend going for 4.8? I read somewhere here on the forum that 4.7 to 4.8 makes a big difference (doesn't make sense I know), but may be there's something I don't know about.

Real world CPL holder.

Agree, but I only wanted to say there is always a risk!

And about my friends both have their university degree and are computer experts now.

So I must assume they know what they are saying.

Maybe I used the wrong words, they say only do it when you know what you are doing.

There are a lot of things that can go wrong and your system can be harmed.

What I definitely know that Martin's problem is not gonna be solved by overclocking.

First FSX must run good before you even think of overclocking!

I understand that fsx uses the cpu and the graphic card is not so important. I think Mathijs (aerosoft) told in his settingspost that some older cards work better.

Martin, I don't know if you did this already, but format the whole thing and start over again. If you install FSX, start it up. (look at the framerate)Than close it and install the SP1/2 or Accelerator, then start up again. (If you uses GOLD no need for that.)

Than follow Word Not Allowed's guide. They were right here. It gives better framerate.

Start up every time you installed a scenery or plane. Sometimes you see where the problem start.

I know,....it is a lot of work :-)
