FMS

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if there is a specific tutorial or U tube video dealing with the creation of flight plans and how to activate them for use within the aircraft?  Reading that sentence, it won't be a surprise that I'm still having problems that element of an otherwise terrific aircraft. I'm in pretty good shape as far as  activating the systems and getting of the ground but.....that FMS is defeating me! I've done hand flying with no problems but I'd sure like to be able to fly using flight plans.

Hi Jack,

that FMS is a ...., that's why I love it - and rather different from what we're all used to IMHO  :P Of course I'm no expert either, but have you checked this collection of info from the majestic forum?

Hope this helps,

Pete

The FMS is quite intuitive once you get used to pressing LIST in the FPLN page. The FMS in the Q400 is really very well designed. Data selection is very easy, and instead of gazing back at you with a prompt, provides full textual lists you can browse and select from.

Robin.

Robin, Pete & Kyle.........

I used a bit of each of your suggestions and ended up finally making an almost complete FMS flight.  The only problem was figuring out the V Nav landing process.  Still working on that. But, the aircraft followed the flight plan, so that was a giant step.I ended up making a manual landing which is always a good thing to practice.

Thanks for all you help.

VNAV is only used for descent, and there is no auto-land capability (only automated approach capability, up to Cat.II). For Cat.II approach mode, ensure you tune both NAV radios to the ILS frequency.

Pleased you're making progress with it!

Best regards,

Robin.

I'v made a few videos of flying this thing. By no means am I an expert on the Q400, I'v never flown in one in real life even as a passenger... but here's a small selection of some of the flights I'v done so far:

Jack,

Someone has also posted a link to a complete UNS-1 manual that is very useful and also a very interesting read. Many advanced features of the UNS-1 will be added in the Pro edition, such as entering winds at your waypoints, pilot-created waypoints, etc.
