FSX overclock?

Featured Replies

Knowing that FSX runs better with a higher CPU freq, I was wondering what the optimum freq is, or is more just better, and how to best get there?

Cpu frquency is not like the one for radio receiver, so there is no optimum frequency. In the case of CPUs frequency is related to the states of signal lines and driver transistors. For that the bigger the clock rate, the more you get performance from the processor which means again faster running software.

There is no simple way to say how to achieve the best overclock. First, it depends on processor and main board. With some MBs, overclocking capabilities are almost zero and some processors are multiplier locked, which means you have just few MHz of bus speed to rise. Then there is cooling which has huge impact in the overclocking capability. Other components may play their part in the show, mainly memory, if system is using dividers, like X58 platform.

After setting significant overclock, hours of stress testing is required preferably with different testing programs to make sure it is stable. Hardware and overclocking enthusiast forums are the best place to search OC information regarding specific hardware types.

It's a balancing act.  A super fast overclock on the CPU can be less than spectacular if the RAM and video card cannot keep up.  Generally speaking, FSX comes alive when the CPU is at 4 GHz or faster, but you do need fast RAM to truly take advantage of all that CPU speed.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Not all freq speeds are = across all CPU's i.e;  4core Haswell @ 4GHZ is "faster" or more powerful for FSX than Ivy 4core @4GHZ and so on down the line.. and when it comes to FSX just pretty much forget AMD..unless @6 GHZ :)

Might be better to move this over to Hardware forum and ask in there (per the rules)

FSX+ 3DS Max, CS5.5

4790K @ 4.8K Asrock Xt3 - 16GB 1866 CL-9 - NV 1070 GTX - 240GB Intel SSD - 2TB Barracuda - Win10-64

Near Silent Noctua D-14 3-Fans - Two - NFA-15cm and - One NFA-14cm  All @ 700 rpm - Bitfenix Shinobi Case - (Non Delided CPU)

My 3 year old, unclocked, AMD does pretty darn well in FSX.

4.8ghz 3970X here with a 6GB NVIDIA Titan. The NGX with the wrong weather at the wrong place can still put it in its place though.

That said, give it something like the Q400 out of say Flytampa Dubai at a REX cloudless sunset and it's absolutely sublime.
