August 16, 201312 yr Author maybe Austin and his team are too busy enjoying FTX GLOBAL  :Just Kidding: LOL, yea it's a nice product. Quiet can sometimes mean a pleasant surprise, or it could mean a disappointment. I have no idea what their income is but I hope it is enough to keep the ball rolling. Bob Officially retired

August 16, 201312 yr It's been over 1 month since Ben made a post on the developer blog. That's a record by a "country mile" in the history of July and Augusts since the developer blog has been going since 2006. He often has posted on the blog that he'll be away for 1 - 2 weeks on vacation sometime around the end of July, but even so - this level of inactivity is unprecedented. I'm suspecting something's wrong here. There's a lot of posts that lead up to the arrival of a new beta..... and I don't see a new beta arriving any time soon. In fact come to think of it, he's said that there isn't any development roadmap beyond an anticipated autogen drop. From here (in post replies): http://developer.x-plane.com/2013/07/x-plane-10-22-is-final/ We haven’t decided on the timing, numbers, or precise feature set of the upcoming releases. It's clear that Ben is out of action. The reasons for that are speculative, but I have my suspicions.
August 16, 201312 yr Commercial Member It's clear that Ben is out of action. The reasons for that are speculative, but I have my suspicions. How do you come to the conclusion that it's "clear"? In my view, the big amount of blog postings over the last months was due to the many instabilities and required fixes and important notes for addon developers regarding the 64 bit transition, plus the release of WED 1.2. Now, that XP 64 bit is finally rather stable, and WED 1.2 is done, the first thing I would do (in Ben's place) is to take a long vacation (at least some weeks). Then, as is well-known, the next changes are autogen, crowd airports and scenery recut. This is nothing you could write much stuff about in a developer's blog, because that blog seems to be mainly for providing important information for addon developers -- it's not a blog with news intended for X-Plane users. Interesting points you raise. I know there are people who chip in to the core development, but apart from Ben are there any others working full time on X-Plane? Austin himself seems to be either fighting lawsuits or playing with Xavion. IMHO for a title such as X-Plane with so much potential, it will never be a major-league player unless more resources are invested. Does it make so little money for AM that he now sees that no further investment in XP is necessary? The other point about Ben's blog; what else is there to provide information for X-Plane users about future developments? Main website communication would seem to be now zero, the only news on the X-Plane.com website being Uniloc and Xavion. It's marketing and customer relations, but who looks after that, Ben again? Come on LR please pull your socks up and get pro!! ^_^
August 16, 201312 yr Commercial Member From the perspective of a "simple" customer, you are right in many points. However, X-Plane has never been a true mass-market product, but only one of various LR endeavours, which is shown for example by XAvion. Side note: XAvion is actually a very serious tool and has been so far received quite well in the real-world flying community, at least according to several aviation forums. If it works as good in real as it does with X-Plane, it can get useful esp. in IFR conditions or when you need to know where you can land in an emergency (in fact this is the most unique feature: It does not only show you the way to the nearest airport, but also calculates if and how you can make it there.) Does it make so little money for AM that he now sees that no further investment in XP is necessary? From what I heard, the iOS X-Planes games make the most money currently for LR, but I don't know if this has changed since XAvion. But X-Plane exists since 1993 and so far Austin has never had a reason to stop it's development. Mario Donick .:. vFlyteAir

August 16, 201312 yr Author So, let me understand. Not to be too critical here, but common sense tells me that we have a credible source (from a credible source), that it is still being worked on. It sounds like a James Bond movie or something to do with National Security. If it is being worked on then why is it a secret? It takes one little post from someone to say "Working on it". Not saying anything causes suspsicion IMO. You have all these folks out there that bought the product, but now it is a secret if they are moving forward with development? I admit that the developer has no obligation to say anything, but just out of courtesy, one would think a small statement is a drop in the bucket. Regards Bob Officially retired
August 16, 201312 yr Bob, I'm not sure Austin visits Avsim that often. Also, as I also tried to pass, they took some days off for vacations, and they coincided, thus most probablythe reason why Ben's blog is also quite lately... We're more used to successive updates, blog entries, etc... but, as the platform stabilizes, and maybe some new features require a lot of development, and testing before being announced ( and I'm not saying with this that I know of anyhing in particular, because i do not!... ), it's natural that it looks like there is less activity. We should wait, after all, the other examples take usually a lot more time to give updates - FSX... P3D... AeroflyFS... Aerowinx... DCS World has been a positive exception, with now weekly updates from one of the leaders ... X-Plane 10 going into more detailled mesh and autogen will certainly be a huge effort... Add to it any further good news on fixes, features, etc... and, it'll take it's time ;-) I'm sure that in the end we will feel it was worth the wait! August 16, 201312 yr Andras (alpilotx) already made a statement a few days ago. So they're working on it. Georges - OpenStreetMap - Ubuntu GNU/Linux -
