B777 Door Design

I watched a doc on the making of the 777.  It was very detailed.  For instance, they spent a good 20-30 minutes on the door design and problems they faced with it.  My question is why did they decide to make the doors "Airbus" style on the 777?  When did this change?  Was the 777 the first Boeing plane with doors that opened like sliding glass doors?  

 

I know the 767 slides up, the 737 opens like a clam as well as the 747.  I guess it all comes down to how the airplane was designed and that's that.  Anybody with the correct answer?

From experience I can say the 777 doors are easier to operate since they slide left and right, once you release the gust lock all you have to do is pull it towards you and move the handle to the close position and since many airlines have the gate agents open/close doors its easier since they take up less space in the JB while moving. One thing that many FA's don't like about the 737 door is how you have to move the girt bar manually to arm the door and after doing that you really should wash your hands since who knows whats near that floor.

I've never operated an airliner's door before and probably won't ever get to (reaches for pill bottle, jack daniels, and pen and paper) but yeah those 737 doors look like a handful to open and close.

much less muscle effort required to operate 777 & airbus type doors from inside or outside - user friendly. also hinge arm is where emergency open-assist cylinder is fitted

The 737 doors can get quite heavy, depending on age of the airframe in question. Doors 2L en 2R are quite easy to handle, but the front doors can be rather heavy, especially 1R.

Is that because they get used more often?

Both forward doors, due to the shape of the fuselage curving in at the front, and the hinge mechanism, effectively don't just swing out, but actually slightly swing upwards. That makes them harder to open than the rear doors.

They are. Took a LOT of effort for a petite F/A, especially to close them. I made a habit of waiting up top of the stairs to see if the FAs needed help closing. Some of the girls really had a hard time closing the door. (Not that they couldn't do it, but sometimes it did look like they were about to snap in two unless helped).

 

 

With Airbus, it was smooth sailing. Push the unlock thingy, pull the door towards back. Easy.

From what I understand of the video, seems like the plane either as not the parking brakes set or it failed and no chocks either, so the plane moved while the jetway was in place so it just kept part of the doors and the hinge have not resisted.

From experience, the boeing styled 737 doors are incredibly tough to open! Especially on windy, wet days. It's probably for the best that the 777 uses this new style - must be much easier for the crew.
