It's all gone horribly wrong......

Hi All

I've been using DX10 for quite a while now but relatively recently my fps has dropped to 10 :( I've got a reasonably well specced rig and I don't think I'm throwing too much at it. Mainly using Aerosoft AXE with UK2000 airports along with UTX and GEX Europe, REX textures, OPUS weather and Radar Contact.

I've probably read and applied way too many tweaks to the stage I can't keep track of what I've done!!

I would be very grateful if someone could take a look at the attached .cfg and NVI screenshots and try and point me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Alan

First of all, try with new fsx.CFG (delete the current one and let FSX build new one) and follow the How To guide that Paul J wrote and can be found here:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/387343-the-how-to-doc/

For your NVidia settings, also follow the guide, it explains everything B)

It's not that I don't personally want to help you, but it would all come down to those settings. If you tried the suggestions in there but still face problems, Paul, me and others will be happy to help you further :smile:

Just start of from scratch with a brand new fsx.CFG and set AA settings correctly (to either 4 X MS or other setting suggested in the guide-- in conjunction with your 4 X SGSS line which is fine) and I'm sure you will end up with a nice running system in DX10!

But first you need the basics, then we can go into the specifics.

Mark

I really don't know anything about DX10, but the general idea when something goes wrong is just think about the last like 1 - 5 things you've changed/installed/done, and then undue each one.

I took a look all the way down, Alan, and it looks quite ok: The only aberrant settings which I don't like are these:-

CLOUD_DRAW_DISTANCE=7   //    I don't commit to greater than 3.
CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=8  //   Here - 7 is suffish.
 and..
IMAGE_COMPLEXITY=5
   //  This one is also a killer......

I have a fairly warm pc, and I still roll these back to those suggested settings..... You may already appreciate, Alan - one of the rules of instrument flying is to take in the instrument panel as a "whole" - never fixating on one particular gauge - doing so can cause all kinds of difficulties, and always at the wrong time.....  Generally, a lot of moderate settings work much better than a smaller number of very high settings.

I concur with Mark, very much so. There are a growing number of pretty sharp DX10 "techies" here, and Mark is one of them! So - do what he suggests, put this config aside, and allow fsx to build you a new one, adding back such entries as you feel are needed.

You're loading up an awful lot of overhead with those aeroplanes and airports, Couatl, Flight Recorder, Traffic Board, etc.. I suspect also you may not be "leaning up" the system, too, by using a program to shut down the extraneous background services - and too, you may want to look at not loading up the half of the world where you never fly (Scenery library) - and any other airport or scenery - they're all overhead, and at a time when you system is feeling the pinch!

Thanks for the replies guys and thanks for taking the trouble to read the attached files, much appreciated!!

I'll do as suggested and report back. I do notice I get a noticeable pause, like an elastic band is the only way I can describe it, but I think that's an AXE problem.

Again many thanks

Edit PS I use Razer Booster to cut down running processes, it's just knowing what to stop.......

Again many thanks

Have you FSUIPC to save flights on the go or/and time corrections ? Doublecheck FSUIPC settings just to be sure

Hi Guys

Well, done as I was told :rolleyes: and fps up to 18-20 sat at the gate at UK2000 EGLL in the AXE. Pushback and taxi smoothish at around 17fps (thanks Michael for the FSUIPC hint!! I had save flights checked) Climb again smoothish at about 23fps and cruise smooth as far as I could tell at 28-29. Landing at UK2000 EGFF with fps of 28-29

I was happy with that and I did have UT2 set at 80% :lol: Will give it another go with no AI, although I never fly like that, AI is a must for me.

The only thing I didn't seem to have was wave animation, but I can live without that.

The one thing I didn't add to the .cfg was bufferpools, would that iron out any (very) minor stutters?

Anyway thanks to you guys for helping, :drinks:  one thing I've learnt is to take notes of everything I change!! :rolleyes:

Regards

Alan

Congrats, Alan!

Yes - add:

[bufferPools]

Bufferpools=0

4.5-gig will feed the 680 very nicely, but you may need to set your water at 5 - maybe 6 IF you get any flashing, (although there are other ways in dealing with that).

Wave animation is really an issue of what water isused and selected, type of wave pattern, and so forth - REX - Active Sky - FSWC -FSWCLite all will have this facility, although the DX10 Fixer has this built in.

:wink:

you mentioned Image complexity being a killer, and the OP has it set to the same value as me.  what does this setting do,  where does it come from, and what would be a more reasonable setting?  not really having probs with my setup, just curious.

Well, take Resturants - instead of one type of resturant - there will be five different types - same with Gas/Petrol stations - complexity being the number or amount of different objects. I'm not sure it will apply to trees, but I don't see why not. The greater the number of different objects - the more memory they will take. Add the other killers - Autogen, traffic - all types and weather, and one may be slowly approaching that OOM limit - not so important in DX10, but it still has to be painted on the screen so there's an impact. Add the (US) big West Coast airprts, some AI and a PMDG 777/747/737 and we may be down to a (smooth) 17fps. It's all a compromise, a little of this, a little of that.. all personal preference.

I like LAX  - SFO - SAN - PHX, and sooner or later Orbx will release the two areas - NORCAL and SOCAL - and then we shall see some heavy-duty memory usage, flying the LH Maddog! ...but right now - the "thrust" is PNW, with the A2A 172, Orbx airports, FS Global RW, doing VFR/IMC flying, navigation practice and looking at the whitecaps on Puget Sound!

Re your question, Shawn: if frame rates are being hit upon, lets move a few "heavy hitters" down one, maybe two notches, and do some flights, and see where it goes: nothing radical. I've seen Airport Vehicles set to "3" and "4". Anything over a "1" is a recipe for disaster, Cars - road traffic is good, anywhere from 8 to maybe 20, but is a good candidate for reduction without too much disappointment, but no boats of ships - not that they are frame hogs - it's just that I personally, don't need to see them, whereas I do like to see cars, trucks, etc.. The experience is flying and what goes along with it is quite subjective. It will certainly pay you to see exactly what each individual parameter in the cfg does, Shawn, and whether it is important in what it contributes, and what effects it has or has not.

Equally, the OS needs attention, along with choice of hardware - all too deep a subject for discussion here tonight!

All the Best,

pj

Thanks, I'm an FSX tweaker from way back, but I don't remember too much discussion on that particular setting, so again thanks for the info.  basically, so I understand,  that setting limits the types of autogen displayed to only a few varieties on the lower settings, and more types of objects on the higher.  I lowered mine to "4"  and didn't notice any immediate difference in looks.  may have to play with that one a bit, now that I know what it does.

 Hi Paul

Thanks for that :smile2: I use REX for all textures so I'll delve into that a bit more deeply.

If anyone one has any suggestions please feel free to share :lol:

Again thanks
