New GPU for "everything"?

Featured Replies

A GTX 760 would save you a lot of money and runs every modern game at great FPS if you are using 1920x1080 resolution.

770 or 780 is what I'd buy today, depending on the resolution you plan to run.

Wrong forum for this question (we should probably be over in the video card forum), but since we're here... if price was no object, would there by any advantage to a Titan over a 780?  Am trying to figure this out at the moment, so it's a live issue for me at least.  Thank in advance for any insight you (or anybody else) can provide.

Yea I agree with the wrong place for posting, but I'm suspecting that the mods will move it to the right forum if need be.

Money is everyone's issue, but if I take 4 if not more years between each upgrade, I'll buy the best out there given I can justify the item.

I can justify for a 780, but titan, not yet...

Not really. An overclocked GTX 780 can beat a titan.

Personally I see no point spending the extra money.

770 or 780 is what I'd buy today, depending on the resolution you plan to run. If you're still on a 1920x1080/1200 setup, the 770 is going to run everything fine. If you'd doing 1440p or a surround setup, the 780 is going to be better for that.

I really appreciate this response.   I just ordered the parts for my new build, based on everything NickN lists in his bible post, and he says a 780 is a MUST to get the full potential out of the parts I'm ordering:

CPU - Intel Core I7-4770k Haswell 3.5GHZ

Mobo - Asus Sabertooth Z87 LGA 1150 USB 3.0 SATA 6 Gb/s

Memory - G.Skill Trident X 8 GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)

CPU Cooler - Thermalright Archon SB-E x2

GPU -  EVGA Superclocked GTX 770 2GB PCI 3.0

Case - Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced

Notice I ordered the GTX 770.   Why?  Because the 780 is about $250 more.   I don't know what the performance increase in FSX is relative to the 770, but I have to imagine it's marginal at best.   Another reason: I only use a single monitor with 1920x1080 resolution and FSX is the only "game" I play.   I know the 780 has 3 GB 384bit video memory, and the 770 is 256bit 2 GB memory.  In my mind that means the additional memory is only good for those with super high resolutions or multiple monitors.   Also, the 770 has a faster processor and memory clock.

Still, I feel a little bit of buyer's remorse, and have canceled the 770gtx order awaiting further research into whether or not I'm selling the new system short by opting for a 770 instead of the 780.   I can afford the 780, I just don't feel it's worth the extra $250.  But I will spend the extra money if it's proven that FSX really will benefit from the bump in memory or other under the hood improvements I don't know about.   I can't help but feel like I'm throwing off the "fine tuned" balance of the NickN approved Haswell spec, as I tend to follow his advice "down to a tee."

Any other hardware experts here who can help me decide once and for all if the 780 is really necessary for my Haswell build?

Will you be considering going P3D v2 when it comes out?  I know that they will be better utilising GPU more than what FSX currently does.

P3D v2?   I'd love to, but if I can't run any PMDG planes there is no point.   I never fly non PMDG.

I have read the previews and salivated at the feature list, I have to hope that if it takes of PMDG and other major holdouts will change their mind and support what could very well be the SP3 we have been dying for!
