October 20, 201312 yr Man, those were the days! Saw one in real life while I was flying a C172 around Florida years ago. Can't remeber where it was parked, think it was Sanford. Had classic Lufthansa livery. What a beauty. Got a tour of a Lockheed Jetstar while I was there as well. Was parked in a Hangar right beside the Connie. October 21, 201312 yr Wow! Thank you for post that link. My first time up in any airplane was on a TWA Super Connie flight when my family flew from Kansas City to Miami to visit our grandparents on my mother's side. My Avtar (left bar photo) was taken several years ago when I was sitting in the left seat of what I believe is one of only two Super Connie's still airworthy. I had a hop-on ride later that day as the pilots for the foundation that restored it took one of their flights to gain type certification. That was at Camarillo, California. There was another C121 on display at Camarillo which recently was restored to the point that it could be flown to Chino, California, then permanently retired. I believe the other SC still airworthy is at Kansas City Municipal airport. The Connie we visited that day had been in military service for both the Navy and Air Force. It was restored by a Swiss non-profit named SCFA and later ferried to Europe where it makes the rounds of European air shows and exhibits. sponsored I believe by Breitling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4cUO47xVD4 During the restoration, the ferry flight to Europe, and during its early days in Europe, some employees and/or members of SCFA created a quite good model for FS9 and were in the process of transitioning it to FSX when that part of the project was scrubbed. It required a paid license, which I hold for FS9. They abandoned it before completion of the FSX model. I was able to get an license-free FS9 version installation file from one of the pilots I had met earlier at Camarillo, but have not been able to get it fully working in FSX. I can get it in the air and fly it effectively, have the panel fully working, but lack the knowledge/ability in FSX to properly position some of the files to render the interior. When in Camarillo, accompanied by a friend who was former Navy, we engaged the senior technician on the job in about an hour long discussion. It was fascinating. He too was former Navy, a Chief. He had a long career on the Connie, and had quite a few stories. I wish I could recall all of the details. One of the fascinating facts he pointed out was that the Connie may still hold the world's record distance endurance record for a non-refueled propeller driven airplane. And the fact that flight was not limited by fuel capacity or burn, but instead by the amount of oil it burned. Another interesting story, if it is true, is that the US DOD originally ordered all of its C-121C's for the Navy, but before they were even half delivered the DOD diverted more than half to the Air Force. I am former Air Force, so my former Navy friend carried a big s e grin for several days after hearing that the Navy created the only set of military technical and pilots reference manuals and that the Air Force had to come crawling to the Navy for them. That C-121C we saw at Camarillo was at one time engaged in submarine recognizance missions up and down the Pacific coast. In a display in its cabin was a plexiglass covered display case that held an original TWA airline ticket from Los Angeles to Kansas City in 1948. The fare printed on the ticket was if I recall correctly $7.50 plus some small taxes and fees. Thanks again for the link to that early video. I loved it. October 21, 201312 yr Author Wow! Thank you for post that link. Thanks again for the link to that early video. I loved it. Glad you liked it. I can understand your chagrin at developing a good model for FSX. I'm doing something similar for FS9 regarding the VC10 by updating and adding all the missing bits. It takes a month of Sundays to get it exactly right and although workable It's still a long way off completion.
