How to record a video

I watched that video and it's not the type of FSX video I want to create. I just want to create the simple pushback-taxi-takeoff from a wing view with the sound synced. I have not seen anywhere where that is explained.

If I'm understanding you correctly, what you want to do should be very simple. Open FSX and setup a flight with the plane of your choice on the runway, tarmac, wherever. then after you take off select "View" from the taskbar and a drop-down list of various POV options will be available.

The exact POV may not be available if it wasn't in the aircraft's cfg file, (you can change that but that's a different subject entirely). Otherwise, select "Lock Spot View" and then cycle through the FSX default views which will all be outside the plane. Then zoom in/out, move left/right/up/down to position where you want to be.

Now, while flying, you may want to have the A/P set. Or, you can fly for a few minutes and then Playback the flight and record it at that point. Here's the thing, you need to go to "Options" in the task bar and in the drop-down list, select 'video record this flight'.

I'm paraphrasing but it'll have something like that indicating to record a video. When you select that, the screen will go black, a box will open, and it'll ask you what frame rate you want to set the video recorder to. 1/4 will give you the best quality but of course, bigger file.

Then select the "Record Now", (paraphrasing again but select the one that indicate to begin recording). The screen will return to FSX and you'll see a red bar on the bottom left of the screen indicating that you are recording. You press the ESC key to stop the recording and the screen will immediately go to the final selections for your video,.

Title, (you only get this chance to name it so be sure that's the title you want), and any notations to yourself that you want to make. The video will be saved in your O/S Library in "Documents">"Flight Simulator X Files" folder. If you named the video "Flying in xxx" for instance, then you would scroll to the "F's" in the list of FSX files and you'll find it there.

If you double click it, FSX will startup and the video will begin. the file name is ".fsr" and I have yet to find a program that could convert that properly. That said, it's been a while since I searched and I think you may be able to find one now.

Using FS Recorder you're able to do your flight just like you normally would using any view you like but make sure to start the FS Recorder recording at the beginning of your flight. Then in the same way stop the recording at the end of your flight.

You will then be able to play back your flight from any view you like just like you would be doing the flight all over again. Fact is that is exactly what you're doing only that it's automated and everything is handled by FS Recorder following every move you did during the flight.

It is at this time you use any other video capturing software you like to do the actual recording of the flight from any view(s) you like. I'm using a software called Action! developed by a company called Mirillis and it's really, really good compared to most alternatives such as FRAPS etc.

Then the last step would be to use your video editing software of your own choice. I'm very happy with Sony Movie Studio.

I wrote in some post above in this thread that if you're interested you can see an example of all this by searching on YouTube for my name (Richard Åsberg) and then check out my flight from ESSA-EKCH in particular. Most other flights are mostly shot from the cockpit view as I didn't use FS Recorder for those.

In fact, I'm about to install FS Reorder! I've been "FSX'n" for over 5 years and I always knew about FSR but for one reason or another, I didn't install it.

However, I understand that it'll make it possible to actually see the carriers when you're landing on them, right? I mean, the recorder in FSX will let you do that but I want to see the landing from another POV than from inside the cockpit. I can't land if I'm not in the cockpit so I can't record the Touch Down moment.

From what I understand, that takes a little doing but FSR is where you start. Then comes the video recording software and finally the editing. I have one of the best Freeware video recorder I've ever seen. It's called VLC and it has all kinds of things you can do with it.

The only problem is that I have never had the time to learn how to do it, lol.

Exactly, using FS Recorder you will be able to see everything you do just like when you do the actual flight and reason for this is using FS Recorder you actually don't record the flight in the normal sense of the word but rather record all parameters such as the exact location of all objects like your a/c, any AI a/c (if you have that option enabled in FS Recorder), the position of your flaps, gear, thrust levers etc etc.

Then when you choose to play back a recorded session FS Recorder will use all the logged information to re-create your flight sort of speak. So again, you will not be looking at a recorded flight but rather do the same flight again but everything will be controlled by FS Recorder based on the information recorded during the first flight. I was very impressed myself when I learned that you're even able to record any online AI traffic when you're doing an online flight on VATSIM or IVAO. So looking at my flight from ESSA-EKCH for instance the traffic you see in that clip is the actual online traffic that was present when I did the flight. That is very cool I think!

Using FS Recorder you'll be able to make very cool videos but it does take a lot of time, effort and skill to come up with a good result. That's the reason I've been "lazy" in most of my clips by skipping the use of FS Recorder and rather record the flights in "real time" and then just edit the clips afterwards.

So I take it this means you don't use the render video option in FS recorder? I have figured out how to record stuff but the problem is during playback like with say the PMDG 737 there are always bells and whistles going off because it seems like the plane isn't configured correctly for the situation and the sound is never synced. How can I make sure the different planes preform correctly in the beginning of the video so there aren't all the bells and stuff going off and how do I get the sound to sync or do I need to find audio from somewhere else?

I will have to search for that program thank you for the suggestion.

No, you're correct when I used FS Recorder I didn't use the render video option in FS Recorder. Using an external video capturing program such as Action! is much better IMO.

The reason you run into issues during playback with the a/c configuration which is especially true for advanced addons a/c such as the NGX is because the a/c is not in the same state as it was when you started the FS Recorder recording. Also IIRC there were issues if you were starting the recording before the engines were running and the systems were powered ON. This might have changed though if later versions of FS Recorder has been released since I used it.

To avoid these type of problems simply wait to start the FS Recorder recording until your a/c is up and running. I usually started the recording at the same time I ran through the before taxi checklist after pushback and with the engines running and all systems powered ON/up. Then when you want to play back the recording make sure the NGX is in the same configuration ie engines running and all systems powered ON/up and then start the playback. I made a NGX panel state which I called something like FS Recorder. Also remember that if you recorded a very long flight make sure you take enough fuel with you even during the playback since it will in fact be a real flight although controlled by FS Recorder.

By doing it this way everything should work just fine during the playback also with advanced a/c such as the NGX and you will see the flaps moving, the reversers kick in at touchdown etc etc and you won't have all the alarms going off in the cockpit.

So there is no way to record the push back and start correctly? I just tried what you suggested at some random airport with the A320 and everything seemed ok. Now I didn't mess with capturing the video just wanted to make sure I got down the recording part of it and I think I do and I also found out I can "control" the engine sounds by moving the throttle so I just tried to match it up with what was happening on the screen. Guess that's one way to get audio haha.

As I remember it I never managed to record the pushback and engine start correctly but maybe you could ask about this in the support forum for FS Recorder. I asked a couple of things there and got pretty quick answers directly from the developer IIRC.

Regarding the sound from the engines that worked automatically for me, the only thing that for some reason didn't work without manually matching the event was to retract the spoilers after reversing.

To sum things up FS Recorder is an amazing piece of software especially considering you can get it for free and you can do some really cool things with it but there are also some issues that can be hard and even impossible to solve that you just have to learn to live with or in some cases find a way around like you did with the sound from the engines.

Looking forward to get a link to your videos :smile2:

I have windows 7 and whenever I add any new add-ons that are to appear in the Menu / Addons drop down, after going through installation process I have to go into the fsx. cfg file ( ... AppsData / roaming / microsoft / FSX ) and go to [TRUSTED] and check the value against the new addon. Its always negative and I alter it to '+' to make it work. Something to do with Win 7 Trust policies and conflicts with FSX.  New addons used to work ok till oneday I put in a saitek FIP and took 2 mths to work out thats what I had to do. Somehow the trust policies became paranoid against all new addons. (I dont even get a message asking to trust or not anymore) ... so if you didnt get such a message either, then check that file.

... forgot to add.. make sure you open fsx.cfg in Notepad

Hi robb13.  Your post regarding new add ons that are to appear in the Menu / Addons drop down, got my attention.  Nothing to do with shooting video but my problem is installing Autothumbnail V2. It doesnt come with installation instructions.  Despite 3 attempts in 3 different locations, it will not appear.

I took a look at my FSX cfg in Notepad last night and I see the 3 entries for Autothumbnail under [TRUSTED] but dont see the plus or negative you refer to.  Here is a copy & paste of those 3 lines in my cfg.  Can you advise me on what I should change to get Addon utilities to work in the drop down ?

Thanks.  Buster.

Ok turns out you can record the push back correctly but the start did not work well. However after watching a bunch of different FSX videos I realized most use actual audio from flights for the engine starts and taxi and takeoff. I have no idea where they got those from unless they just recorded the sounds while on a plane haha.
