  1. This is the way to go for Huey fans, with its working mini guns, rockets etc you can re-create a similar attack scene (not Vietnam) from the movie Apocalypse Now. Excellent detailed model and flies nice. Great Huey sound-pack. Add a bit of "Ride of the Valkyries" DCS is free and the aircraft modules are the best you will find.
  2. To the O.P. It depends what you like really, American or British, the Milviz F4 phantom and F15 are superb. The Aerosoft F14 Tomcat and the Just Flight Tornado GR1 are all excellent choices, I have them all. The Razbam Harrier is a cracker also. If dog-fighting is your thing, take a look at DCS World.
  3. I have my FPS locked at 30 and V-sync set to half refresh rate in NI as per Kostas tweaks, silky smooth in FSX and P3D. Kostas tweaks solved my headaches years ago !
  4. Thanks for all the input chaps, I got it sorted, I habitually fly from my local former RAF St Athan using runway 26. I went into "CURRENT LOCATION" to check the settings and found it on "ACTIVE RUNWAY" re set it back to runway 26 and job done !! Works fine now. Cheers. Buster.
  5. Not starting from a saved flight, I dont save flights. My planes always loaded up on the centerline of the runway, now its off on the far right side, the veer left is more of a turn, quite violent and impossible to control, this is not torque that just needs a bit of rudder input, something badly wrong here.
  6. Seasons greetings to the forum. A new problem has just started in my FSX, when the plane loads (ready to fly) it is on the right side of the runway, when you power up to go it veers sharply to the left out of control. All my planes are doing it. I have re-calibrated my CH Fighter stick and I don't use pedals. Any ideas why this is happening chaps ? Cheers, Buster.
  7. I've always been puzzled as to why makers of throttle controllers have overlooked this, so nice to have the basic essentials of flight controll on the stick or throttle so you dont have to take your eyes off the screen to hit F2 when landing. Many throttles have a useless idle detent, if you close the throttle you know its at idle !! why not make the detent for reverse thrust & prop feather ? Just sayin
  8. I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe this has reverse thrust after the idle position ? Saitek Three Lever Pro Throttle Quadrant (PZ45) Perhaps another member can confirm as I need one too ! Buster.
  9. Wish I was there, nice fire, I could have got close for a warm & chuck some spuds in !
  10. I had complete success with Word Not Allowed's FSX guide using a stock 4770k and GTX580, FSX runs like a dream.
  11. I had the same problem when downloading Milviz stuff. I turned off AV and Windows Firewall, during download and installation then back on after. That fixed it for me.
  12. If you can get 60FPS with a complex plane at a complex airport then you are certainly going to get a consistent 30FPS if you are locked at 30. I fly the PMDG 747 and 737 NGX from Heathrow and Gatwick X and it runs like a dream.
  13. I think you misunderstand, below 27 FPS film or computer rendered motion becomes less fluid, above 27FPS it becomes fluid so 30FPS is the sweet spot. To the naked eye, graphics or film motion looks exactly the same at 30FPS as it does at 60FPS. The point is, anything above 30FPS is completely pointless. Flight simers that crack on about getting 60FPS in these forums do make me laugh ! Locking your FPS at 30 frees up your hardware to handle other tasks more efficiently instead of grinding away producing unessesarily higher FPS. My Brother is an Optician and a flight simer so I do know my facts sir !
  14. 30 FPS is perfect, you don't need any higher. 30 FPS is as fast as the human eye can see, pre digital age, movies were shot at 27 FPS. Lock your FPS at 30 and use the half refresh rate tweak. Overclocking a 4970 is unnecessary, I use a stock 4770 and FSX runs like a dream on a Z87 and 8GB RAM with a GTX580.
  15. There really is no problem with your OS and FSX on the same drive, however, for disaster recovery it makes sense and life easier if the OS is on a separate drive for a cleaner set up. I use a 120GB SSD for the OS and my FSX and other games and apps are on a 1TB Samy Evo. Shove your OS on a 120GB SATA 6 SSD, they are cheap enough now. If you do put everything on one drive, do not install FSX into its default installation path. Follow this guide from the well respected PMDG for a hassle free and clean installation. http://support.precisionmanuals.com/kb/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx Buster.
  16. Better. A few minor points, You would never start an aircraft in a enclosed hangar, especialy a jet ! QRA sheds have no rear wall. 3 things that are drumed into Lightning pilots in training, FUEL, FUEL & FUEL, hence the burners are only used on take off and climb out, seldom used after. Still need to get that touch down shot on landing and because of the very high landing speed of the Lightning the braking chute was always deployed.
  17. Not bad, edit out 6 mins of the taxing, show landing touchdown from external view and deploy the braking chute for effect.
  18. There is not much difference between the Z87 and Z97, if your budget is tight, you will be fine with a Z87. Asus are the MOBO leaders.
  19. Thanks for posting that vid of DM's VC10 with Benoits sounds, I note what you say about the startup surge but apart from that those sounds seem pretty much spot on to me and it underlines my point, in the video the sounds are superb, my VC10 has that soundpack and in FSX the sounds are not even close to the quality of that video, in any view. The strange thing is it says that it was shot in FSX ! Maybe my FSX settings are off on the sound sliders, what would you recommend as the optimal settings here ? Can you post a screenie of your FSX sound settings ? I am using HD sound from my GTX580 through HDMI into a Yamaha AVR in my home theater system. I played around with FS9 and FSX sound cfg files over the weekend. In FSX cfg I commented out (//) ALL the lines under [sOUND] and copied in the FS9 cfg lines and saved. In replay, for the first few seconds it sounded great, then it changed noticeably, when I checked the cfg file again, FSX had re written the lines I commented out. I seems to me that there is something embedded deeper in the software that cant be changed. A shame about that but my curiosity is satisfied !
  20. Excellent, can you post a link here or PM me when the vid is ready ? I suspect I will be your first customer ! Can I invite input from other members to let me know their opinion on P3D aircraft sounds. Does it have the same sound cone as FSX ?
  21. Thanks vololiberista for your input, interesting & gives me a better understanding. I have some free time next week so I am going to load up an old retired gaming PC with FS9 and FSX and do some experimenting, I intend to simply delete the FSX sound cfg file and replace it with the FS9 cfg file and see what happens, if it all goes horribly wrong, it doesnt matter but my curiosity will be satisfied ! Funny you should mention the VC10, I have just been playing around with my DM model in FSX. I replaced the sound files with the excellent sounds by Benoit Plamondon, very realistic. I would love to see what you did to your 10, can I PM you with my Email address ? I have yet to to take the leap into the world of P3D, how are the sounds in that ?
  22. Thanks for the comeback Jim. I have no desire to change any of the aircraft sound files so I will look into fssoundstudio to see if thats what I need to change the FSX sound cfg. I have invested a lot of time and money in my FS PC to get FSX huming along nicely, thanks to a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people on here and elswhere I have got it running smoothly, stutter and blurry free. My final challenge is the awfull way FSX handles aircraft sounds. I too get exited when I listen to the sound of a RR Merlin in spot view only to cringe when you switch to other views where the sound is ruined. I was born and raised with the RAF and my Father flew all the V force aircraft through his career. The sound of a Vulcan at full chat on take of with its famous howl used to give me goosebumps ! When Steve Inwood was working on his Iris Vulcan sound set for FSX I was Beta testing for him as I spent a lot of time around Vulcans as a lad. With all his excellent audio mixing skills he could not re produce the howl in FSX as you could only hear it in real life if you were in front of the aircraft as the howl was caused by the airflow resonating in the intakes. The FSX sound engine as he used to call it would not allow him to re produce it realisticaly. I guess he used the term "engine" to describe the sound cone system. This is a good example to get my point accross and hence my comparison to FS9. In FS9 you could hear the howl, very loud and lovely, in FSX you cant. There is no cone system or sound editor in FS9 so you get the raw sound in replay that is identical to the sounds you hear if you play a FS9 WAV file. I agree with Capt Speirs that FSX butchers aircraft sounds. In my opinion, quality sounds were sacrifced in FSX to provide a novelty sound cone feature that changes the sound as you pan around the aircraft. More realistic ? ... maybe but that raw ground shaking jet growl with the crackle on re heat is simply not there in FSX. Graphics wise FSX is superior, audio wise FS9 is much better .... in my humble opinion. I am not FSX bashing, it is my sim of choice but I am trying to perfect it to how I want it. FSX was an unfinished product and never will be, not by Microsoft anyway. I am sure there is some very talented member/s out there that has solved this problem and I hope he / they find this thread.
  23. Thanks for that Capt Speirs. My posts were misunderstood or simply not read properly ! Thanks for the link to the FSX sound cone info, great stuff, I knew I was right ! I am hoping someone somewhere has figured out a way to tweak this to stop FSX from ruining the great sounds that Devs work so hard to produce accurately. I wonder what would happen if I deleted the FSX sound cfg and replaced it with the FS9 one ? It cant be that simple !? ...... can it ?
  24. Since posting, I have been trawling through some old forums that I was lurking on looking for solutions. I seem to remember someone mentioning a "Waterloop" tweak in the FSX sound cfg, does this sound familiar to anyone ? I cant find where I saw it, guess I should have printed it !
  25. Hi Jim. I think you misunderstand, I am not complaining about developers efforts on the sounds they supply, as I said in my OP, most of them are great, if I find any that are not I look around for better ones and I use the Avsim library, TSS and others when I want to replace sound files, not a problem. My issue is how FSX handles the sound files, it is quite different from FS9 which, in my opinion was much better. I had a good email exchange Steve Inwood of MSS before he sadly passed, he produced some awesome sounds, he explained to me that there were limitations with the FSX sound engine as he put it, that were not there in FS9. Apparently FSX somehow distorts the sounds and you end up with that familiar wishy washy sound in play. There must be some kind of in built sound editor for the cone system to work as you pan round the aircraft. I would be interested to hear from others if there are any known tweaks to the FSX cfg sound section ? Are there any lines in the cfg that can be "commented" ( // ) out to stop the sound cone working so that the sound functions like FS9 ? I do this with "camera views" in the FSX cfg and aircraft cfg files to eliminate views that I dont want. A great tip I asked for here on Avsim. I am not comfortable messing around with cfg files unless I get a recomendation from someone who has tried and tested a tweak and found it works. I trust this clarifies my point.
