Triple versus dual monitors

Featured Replies

I am thinking of replacing my triple 4:3 monitors with dual 16:9 monitors.  My preference for triple has been that on approach and take off the centre line is in the middle of the centre monitor.  It occurs to me that using the dual will put the centre line behind the bezels.  Is that so? Is there any workaround?

You could move your eyepoint to a point offset to the left of flight deck center (assuming you're flying left seat).

Thanks Bob

Why didn't I think of that?  The need was not there when square monitors were easy to get.  Three wide monitors need too much space for spanning.

Frank If you are using Win7 (and I think Win8) you will not be able to span one continuous view across

two monitors in FSX without the use of third party software.

The best you can do natively is a separate view on each monitor.

I had a 3-monitor setup with Nvidia surround. The 72" span widescreens and the heavy duty mounting rig got old in a hurry.  Like jonahbird, I considered two monitor span but that bezel always near center is just too distracting.

My setup now : A 33"  Vizio LED (or LCD, can't recall) TV for FSX and a 24" ASUS for Active sky, EFB, etc.

Nvidia DOES span the two monitors but I specify one as Primary. As far as I know (never tried it) but Nvidia surround works on two monitors. ATI probably the same.

Btw...Going back to one big monitor was one of my few smart moves :)  Fewer wires, cables, etc. and I final;ly dumped TrackIR and the constant adjustments it required (along with more wires and a headset)

Thanks gb and Neal

Neal has confirmed my suspicions.  I will try to continue with my (now old) 20" square Viewsonics .

gb - I have been spanning using NVidia settings.  I am intrigued that 2 monitors will not work that way. I gave up on TH2G.

Neal - My old PFC based setup is now relegated to just my low and slow flying.  After trying many screening methods I found Dell's 30" HD monitor.  I use that with TrackIR.  It not only has a high definition (2560x1600), it is 16:10 ratio.  That extra vertical viewing area makes a lot of difference to the immersion feel.  But, it is (or was) expensive.

The reason for my dual v triple question is that I am now setting up Jetmax running iFly737PRO.  PRO converts the VC mode to exclude the panel.  So, all it will show is the outside scenery.  The span of my existing trio is about the same as the Jetmax.

4:3 monitors are excellent for triple screening.

You get less extreme left and right distortion than say three 16:9s or even 16:10s (at the same zoom ratio).

Frank, I'm running a JetMax with triple screens (using triplehead2go),but did wonder about a single large screen, 2 screens or 3 screens, or even a projector. I find with with 3 screens there is some stretching towards the edges of the left and right screen, which I can minimes to an extent by tinkering with the Ezdok settings, but I'd be interested to see your results with 2 screens.

Hi Eugene

Neal confirmed my suspicions about the bezels running down the centre, so I am continuing with my triple set up.

I see you run yours in Windows mode.  Any reason for that?  I had both versions of TH2G in the past, but have found the NVidia control better.  I always run in Full Screen mode.

I'm often in/out of the FSX menus in flight, and found that switching between full screen and windowed screen could cause the graphics to throw a wobbly, runway becomes a green field or sim freezes, so I stick with windowed mode. Full screen looks better, but I don't have a big problem with it. If I'm getting towards the end of a flight, and I'm pretty sure I won't need to go back to windowed mode, I'll switch to full screen, it seems to cope ok with a limited amount of switching.

Eugene

The only reason I'm using triplehead is that I'm not the greatest at techy stuff, and after many months trying to get triplehead to work on my previous rig, I finally got it working. (Don't laugh - but no where did it say you needed to be in VC mode - I was trying to get 3 2D panels left/front/right to blend together!).

FDS in Canada built and fully configured the JetMax for me, inc 2 networked PC's, all I had to do was connect it up and switch it on.

I assume your using Nvidia surround, which my 670GTX card is capable of. Do you get a better frame rate, or a better visual result over triplehead?

Eugene

3 screens for one wide view :

- do not use Wideviewaspect=true

- set zoom to 0.50

- use the 2d cockpit view without ant gauge visible
