December 26, 200421 yr I have this "obsession" that's kind of driving me nuts. I just feel like I always have to fly from where I left off. It teaches me more about geography than I will get from just reading or looking at maps, and you learn to appreciate distances. But sometimes I feel like flying somewhere that I'm not close to- like cruising around Vegas after I just landed the Robinson somewhere in PA. When I do fly it though, although it's fun- I feel like I cheated. Do I have a problem, or do others like to fly this way? I would like to see the whole FS world, but I feel like it will take WAY too long this way. What's a good "excuse" that I can tell myself so I don't feel like I'm cheating? Maybe my last landing was a bit rough, and I was unconcious during the air ambulance ride to the specialist in Vegas? :)I'd love to hear some feedback on what others do.
December 26, 200421 yr Me too. And if it happens that I land in PA and want to see Las Vegas next, then I'll use the Learjet or fly an airliner to KLAS, then fire up whatever plane or helo that I want to fly low and slow over the Strip. It works for me. R-
December 26, 200421 yr I'll often land and taxi to parking, shut down the aircraft and then save the flight. That gives me the option to come back to the same airplane at the same place, same time, etc. But, it also gives me the option to fly somewhere completely different, but return to my original flight if I want to. At any given time I might have two or three of these flights going - a Baron in New England, a Shorts-360 in the Caribbean, and maybe a 737 in the South Pacific. That way, I don't feel like I've "cheated" to get to a destination. I might feel a bit schizophrenic, though...
December 26, 200421 yr I don't think I have ever departed where I landed last. I just sit down at the computer, pick two areas that sound interesting, then pick my aeromachine that appropriate for the flight, and head off into the wild blue...
December 26, 200421 yr I've been flying from where I last landed for several years now. :-) Took me two years to circumvent the globe in a variety of aircraft (I prefer GA aircraft to the heavy metal). It was great fun, but I must admit kind of obsessive, too. I'm currently in Boca Raton, FL, (in FS2004 world, that is) having worked my way through the Quebec Short Hops and then down the east coast.Flying from where you last landed helps you get a perspective on the geography and lay of the world, and FS2004 does an especially good job of simulating this. What other computer sim puts the geography and weather of the entire Earth at your disposal?-- Walt
December 26, 200421 yr It all depends on what I'm planning to do. I have 3 or 4 different "scheds" on the go, just depending on what I feel like doing I continue one of them from the last place that one landed. I test a lot of things too though, so there's the occasional time I'll just punch in a place I feel like going and doing some circuits.
December 26, 200421 yr I probably go even further than a lot of people. My philosophy towards flight simulation is that it should also simulate what I could do in real life. Now I am not a real world pilot and never will be so I don't fly the big iron. Instead, I fly a Piper PA28 - either the Dreamfleet Archer or the Carenado Cherokee - because that is the type of aircraft I could learn to fly if I had the money. So I have my virtual private pilot's licence and I have a local airport here in the UK which is my base. Sometimes I will fly over to France for the day just like real pilots do. Other times I just take the plane up for an hour's cruising before returning to my base again.I also enjoy reading about trips real world pilots have done - the sort of thing where a few friends have got together and flown off somewhere together for one or two weeks' holiday. If possible I fly the routes they have taken and when I land anywhere I use the Internet to look up about that place as if I were there for real. It add a great deal of interest to my hobby.Oh - and yes, I always start my next flight from where I have previously landed.David
December 26, 200421 yr I have an even worse obsession...When I first dl or buy an aircraft, I ONLY use the default livery and I ONLY fly from Edwards AFB. Why? Because Edwards is where they test aircraft and I figure I am not qualified to fly the aircraft I am in at normal airports until I have learned all the aircraft's ins and outs.I only use the default livery because that is what I consider to be a "test" livery, as I wouldn't feel right using an airline, or whatever, livery to learn to fly a particular aircraft. Sad but true. :-lol Ark -------------------------- I9 9900K @ 5ghz / 32GB G.Skill (Samsung B) / Aorus Master Mobo / EVGA GTX 2080Ti FTW 3
December 26, 200421 yr Captain Barfbag writes: "I might feel a bit schizophrenic, tough...."The fact is that in the eyes of non-simmers, we simmers all look less or more schizophrenic, I guess....(LOL)The reality is that departing from the spot where you landed last time - as it is done in reality - or departing from quite another point on earth, we all never will see 100% of what the scenery of FS has to offer....
December 26, 200421 yr All I wanna say is: thats one advantage we have over the real world! Sure...fly your set airline routes but INDULGE on the side :)Hop all over the place!..all over the FS world! Theres fun places out there!I fly an A320 from Berlin to Prague and then hop in a YS-11 to do a cargo run in Indonesia!Yaaaaaay!
December 26, 200421 yr When I fly for my VA I always fly to my next stop from where I landed last. Only exception is a group fly-in, although I know of several of our VA pilots that fly over to the starting point of the group flight.Mark. Mark CYYZ
December 26, 200421 yr Some of you guys need to seek help. Now. :( lolMe, I fly to and from wherever I feel like in whatever strikes my fancy. Sometimes, horror of horrors, I don't land. :)Worse yet, if I don't like the real world weather at whatever airport I've started from, I'll pick a different place to start. :)
December 26, 200421 yr Thats usually what I do,in fact that's they way it should be set up in the FS if its "as real as it gets". The simulator should give you the choice of where to be placed on a new install and you can only fly from there.David

Sometimes, horror of horrors, I don't land. :)>>Worse yet, if I don't like the real world weather at whatever>airport I've started from, I'll pick a different place to>start. :)>>I'm with ya, bud! I fly all over the place. If I hear about a nice area then I get out the low and slow and place myself somewhere in the vicinity, take off and just gunk-hole around the area. That said, I'm not really a big iron person. I much prefer the dinky (relatively) planes and mostly fly around the Alaska, Brit Columbia and Washington area. If I've got some planes to try out I'll start a flight and after a few minutes switch to the next one in line. I might try 4 or 5 and then just dump the whole flight. :D
December 26, 200421 yr Hey Christian!Bingo -- I fly 95% of my flights from where I left off. I agree with you; for me, it helps give perspective on geography. The rare exception -- I'm presently trying to find a "special" airfield in Western PA so I took off from Martha's Vineyard and I'm presently flying around Western PA in the FSD Seneca.http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...d=229770&page=2But the minute I find the field and fly it, I'm jumping back to my existing adventure in Provencetown, MA and the NY area (new Megascenery). I think in this case, I'll pass on "flying back to Massachusetts from PA" and kinda' pickup where I left off!Happy Landings!Ed Lin, D.O.S.
