Textures, Landclass, Mesh etc…

Featured Replies

Hey All,

Im about to upgrade to FTX Global I think - but I'm a little ignorant on this side of simming and dont know much about the language or specifics. Could you point me somewhere that explains the distinctions between land classes, mesh, scenery texture et al? I saw on the FTX Global site that its being used in conjunction with UTX? Are these different things? You can use more than one at a time?

Thanks in advance!

Blake Williams

Mesh is the skeleton.

Ground textures are the skin.

Landclass defines what textures to use, where. City, forest, desert, etc.

Vector objects are basically lines. Coasts, roads, etc.

As for what works with what? I will defer to the Orbx people for that one.

Joe

FTXG works well with UTX.  I know, I've been using that combo since FTXG was released.  Right now I'm using SceneryTech landclass (Flight1 software)  and Cloud9 X-Class landclass (FS DreamTeam).  Note, you switch between them, you do not run both at the same time.

FTXG must be installed as a stand alone product, if you have GEX installed it has to be un-installed first.  IMHO, FTXG is superior to GEX (now that's sure to bring down the wrath of the all knowing on my head--LOL)

Yes, UTX and FTXG are different products.  You want both, it's not an "either/or" proposition.  Orbx has just released FTX Vector, which is about the same product as UTX.  Again, you will want one or the other, not both.

To complicate things further, Orbx will in the semi-near future will release FTX Open LC (landclass).  This will hopefully put the other landclass programs to shame--they're pretty old tech.

Isn't UTX both vector and mesh and ftx vector only vector?

Are there any issues with airport height with UTX and ftx global?

No, mesh is mesh and UTX is a program that modifies roads, rivers, and coastlines mainly.  I think it does a few other things too, but it's been a long time since I even opened the program itself--it's one of those nice set it and forget it things.  I believe it does some landclass work too but might not be 100% correct on that.

There are airport elevation issues somewhere in every program I've ever heard of.  I fly into a lot of remote fields (think low and slow flight) and if you want to see airport elevation issues try flying into a remote US Forest Service dirt strip (giggle).

I haven't seen anything to indicate that FTXV is in any way involved in "mesh".

That being said, FTXV placed the default airports at corrected elevations (corrected for the mesh in FS Global 2010). This was logical (from a profit maximization point of view); seeing that PILOT'S is the company that developed both pieces of software.

Thanks for the detailed responses. I'm definitely hopping on the FTX global train with UTX. The elevation issues within mesh programs scares me a little. Is it necessary to have a mesh utility in your opinion?

Thanks again.

Ahh, thanks for the clarification.

Yes, it really is.  Again IMHO.  The elevations in FSX are pretty coarse and not at all detailed.  I think you will want to look at FSGlobal mesh.  I've always used FSGenesis but I'm betting Global will play better with the FTX Vector programming.  Perhaps someone with more knowledge than I (almost everybody) will step in with an oopinion.

As a follow up, you could probably get along "OK" (at best) without a mesh program but if money is not too much of a problem get the mesh too, you won't be sorry.

Thanks again for a detailed response. I'll give all those recommendations a try.
