I would like to know who all flies in real time? I mean it must take a really good while to get from London to New York. Or do you guys just press pause when you have to go to the bathroom? Or maybe there is a time to time ratio that you all follow. Care to lay it on the table?

I think most simmers except diehard fanatics use acceleration when flying long flights, or at least leave the sim and do something else for long periods. The third tactic is to never do long flights of more than 2 hours at all :)

Even in real aircraft crew leave their seats from time to time.Either the copilot takes over, there's an entire replacement crew (or more than one), and/or there's an autopilot.So it's perfectly all right to go do something else for a while when flying long distance, even if that something else means getting out of your seat and away from the screen.

I fly for 2 hours in real-time max. If I have to fly a long-haul flight (like London-Beijing) I take off, climb, settle into cruise and then slew to within 250nm or so of Beijing (after reducing the fuel).Im glad Im not hardcore, enjoy the real world - we only have once chance to do it! :)

I always fly in real time. I also fly from my last destination each time. I have several flights that I use almost every time I fly and seven of eleven of them are over two hours, and three are over three hours.I fly jets, regional and the heavies, and, say, from KLAX to KHOU it is almost exactly two hours. KLAX to JFK is three and a half,I keep at the controls mostly except when nature calls, then the A/P is in charge. The majority of the time I keep busy tracking navaids with the VOR's and ADF, etc. I like to know where I am, even if the GPS is doing it all for me. I use both NAV's and leap frog the signals from current to next, I have only used slew a couple of times to position planes on the apron before saving a flight. Like Glenn, I too fly in real time. On most of my flights I like to fly the same times as the airlines, to see if I can make on time takeoffs and arrival times the same as they do. I also fly from my last destination airport, as would be the case in real life.On long flight I also fly real time. Going from the US east coast to Europe almost all airlines leave in the late afternoon and fly all night. I take off level off and then leave the screen to do other things. I check the progress of my flight once an hour. I get back on the PC when I am about 300 miles from my destination works like a charm.on the return from Europe to the U.S. I take the late flights out which is about 9AM here in Denver and then fly all day, again checking the PC about once an hour.Just my way of flying as real as I can get it :-)BobKDEN

 

Hi,I always fly real time and that's the reason why destinations are not further away than 2-3 hrs.On a few occaissions I flew from EHAM-KJFK and EHAM-KSFO realtime.The latter was during one of the very first online fly-ins of SATCO (predecessor of VATSIM), I think about 8 years ago.In the week before the fly-in every participant had to fly an online test with of the organizers, to make sure his bandwith/lag was enough and not causing troubles.Those were the days :-lol

Go get a Concorde! Real time from London to New York? What's the matter? Twice a day if you want! :-hah No, seriously, I simply call it a waste of time to sit hours and hours in front of your screen, watching the waypoints to pass (in RL you even get paid for this ;-) ) Especially since nothing spectecular or uexpected is going to happen in the FS world.For long-hauls I handle this just like the others here: 4x or 8x accel & doing other things.That's why I prefer aircraft with a "pause at top of descent" function. Sometimes I come back to the screen after some hours just to find out that LNAV has perfectly captured the localizer... at flightlevel 390 unfortunately...By the way, anyone here listening to his favourite MP3s while flying? There's nothing better than some good background music during cruise! No complains about realism, please..Holger.

I fly realtime, I also fly for BAW, so you only get credit for what you fly. Not fly at 8x and get full credit.Pause at descent? Now that's a joke, coming back to the computer after hours of letting the AC fly itself, what's the point here?And yes I also fly more than a few hour flights, I did EGLL - KSEA on the weekend, in a B744, 9.6 hour flight in realtime, online on VATSIM.Each to their own, I guess. And to the fella that mentioned Concorde, Yeah I enjoy flying her too, I Pushed back at Midnight on New years, flew a Maintenance flight to Toronto, and landed 1 hour before midnight local time, that was fun.

I always fly real time and therefore stick to aircraft that are utilized in hops of around 150-250 miles. Years ago I used to do flights of 8 hours or more and turn up the sim rate, and after awhile decided that this really didn't make too much sense.

Only real time for me...have never used the time acceleration in many years of flightsimming.However there have been times in real world flying when I wish I could! ;-)Regards,ScottKJMS

Real Time....Real Weather....and I do leave my screen, check from time to time. I enjoy using all views while flying and seeing where I am. This way you get to see the world as it is in the simulation. Slewing doesn't work for me and takes away the magic.However, I've not done over the "big pond" to London from N.Y. I've done coast to coast USA and points within. Perhaps next week I'll take off from Philly or New York at 7 or 8 PM and with the 5 hours difference arrive in Heathrow in early morning. It'll be great catching up with Dawn over the Atlantic. I've done that in real life a few times. Night goes by quickly, and dawn comes up quickly and you're in London for Morning Tea.

I do all my flight in real time, never use accel, dont matter how long the flight is, im a realsim freak. and i also do the flight at the same time that it is done in real life, like if UAL 667 departs ORD to LGA at say 6:00, then i will depart ORD at 6:00 im the moring in real life, which means i wake up at like 5:00 and set eeverything up and am in the cockpit at around 5:30, and i take into consideration time zones. and i only fly jets, so i take off, climb, engage the A/P and let the MCDU or the FMC fly the plane, im at the screen mostly, but sometimes i leave to get food or bathroom or things of that nature. i know im probably in a minorityAdam

I also fly real time no matter the duration (even six hours). I let the AP take over once I pass a "comfortable altitude" :), then I'll just monitor the waypoints and make sure that the AP doesn't stray. I also like to alternate fuel tanks, so I monitor that. Other times, I'll surf the web on my other computer. I'll also take a bathroom/soda break once in a while.
