What speed should I get before enter FAF

Featured Replies

I know this is a very general question but I would like to know the range of speeds I should have before enter in Final approach fix into a ILS app. I ask this because I have a problem I have noticed recently in my last fights I have reach the FAF with 200 kts or more sometimes, so when the ILS is captured obviously the plane begin with the descent according with FP due to ILS and the speed of my 777 begins to increase sometimes beyond than 210 kts, so you might think its very dangerous enter in final app phase with so greater speed. Last afternoon I did a flight between EFHK - LOWW and got enter into FAF with 200 kts, so the landing was to fast 170 kts, you could think this is very annoying issue. (I have look into FCTM specifically the graphic charts of ILS app but in those charts doesn´t appear reference speeds only the situation and the flaps configuration.)

Please give some directions about it !!!!

Thanks in advance

sorry for my english, not english speaking person.

You should be at 160-170 at that point, flaps 10 (IIRC). Normally I slow down to 180 for localizer capture and then slow down to 160 as FAF approaches.

Flaps 15, I think you mean. There is no flaps 10 on a 777.

The 737 always sneaks in somehow, cheeky little... airplane :)

Hello,  Why has no one mentioned clicking the INIT page which brings up the approach with the approach speeds listed alongside the relevant flap.  Richard Welsh.

Because that's not what he asked

Ironically, I was thinking the 747-400, but I guess the 737 has a flaps 10 setting as well. Does anybody even use it, though, on the 737? It has 5 and 15 as well. Interesting.

I find it works very well on initial glide, especially on long ILSes and especially on the 700.
