February 25, 201412 yr Looking at hopefully finally building my new system in the next couple months now that an unexpected move/house purchase last fall that sidetracked my original upgrade plans is over with. I had originally planned on a 4930K to get extra cores for photo/video editing on the PC as well but I don't think I can do the extra few hundred for the CPU and motherboard that will need. I had also wanted to do a 780 for the videocard, but I'm wondering if a 4GB 770 will perform close enough? I do use a lot of OrbX scenery and I don't know how much of that the video card will affect. I do know right now on my i7-860 (OC a bit) and GTX 560Ti I can easily get blurred land textures (even at the default .33 fiber time) especially in the detailed regions like PNW since I added in the cpu heavy PMDG NGX, so I assume the 4770K will fix that issue. If it's enough of a difference though I will try to pull out the extra $100 (vs. a 4GB 770) for the 780. February 25, 201412 yr It never occurred to me that a 770 wouldn't be strong enough for the 4770K. I've been planning to put together a similar system so will be very interested in the answers. February 25, 201412 yr Author It never occurred to me that a 770 wouldn't be strong enough for the 4770K. I've been planning to put together a similar system so will be very interested in the answers. I think my impression has been that the 770 should be good, but from talking to people like Paul from the DX10 forum for instance it sounds like the 780 will for sure allow things like bufferpools=0 without worries about overloading the GPU etc. AMD Ryzen 9950X3D | Asrock X870E Taichi | Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090 w/EK waterblock | Full Custom Loop Cooling | Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5-6000 | Samsung & WD NVME/SSDs | Phanteks Enthoo 719 | Seasonic Vertex Gold 1200W | Keychron Q5 Max | Corsiar Scimitar Elite SE Wireless | Honeycomb Alpha and Bravo | Logitech Pro Flight Pedals | VKB Gladiator Pro NXT L&R handed | MiniCockpit MiniFCU | Alienware AW34DWF | Asus PG279Q | Win 11 Pro
February 26, 201412 yr I'm running a 2600K @ 4.8 Mhz with a GTX 770 2GB and everything runs very smooth at very high settings with a boatload of add ons. I am running on 1 monitor though. In my opinion, and this is just for FSX, it makes no sense to get a titan or 780 unless you plan on using a 3 monitor setup. It is really wonderful we can buy such powerful graphics cards these days, but the fact remains that FSX still doesn't know how to utilise them and it is still MUCH more important to get the best overclockable chip you can buy before you even think about a video card. If you want to fly XP though, its a whole different story. Just my 2c.
February 26, 201412 yr it sounds like the 780 will for sure allow things like bufferpools=0 without worries about overloading the GPU etc. BP=0 is related to the amount of memory the graphics card has. Not whether it's a 780 or 770. BP=0 worked great on my 1gb GTX 580, and works great on my 4gb EVGA GTX 770 SC. The golden rule, is that if you get artefacts with BP=0 then nock your sliders back a tad. My EVGA GTX 770 works great with my 3770K. My son is having this system, and when I build a 4770K system, I have no doubt it will perform admirably with that too.
February 26, 201412 yr Actually, Bufferpools has more to do with the gpu than the amount of memory on the card, because if your gpu cannot keep up with the cpu it will not work. Like I said, I have a 2gb 770 and also have bp=0 in DX 10, and never had problems.
February 26, 201412 yr I'm running the 770 4gig and can tell you it's an excellent card with plenty of headroom though I'm only running an i5 3570K @ 4.4 on air. I can run P3d (where the 4gig is really useful) maxed out using photoscenery with autogen and I do mean with every setting maxed out! X-Plane 10 really benefits from the extra vram and looks stunning too. Arma 3 I can run at max settings and the same with Assetto Corsa and Star Citizen. It has basically eaten everything I can throw at and looked for more. You imho are always better off with more vram rather than less. You can do more with more and you don't run the risk of realising later that you could have done with more :p0503:
February 27, 201412 yr I have to give a shout-out for the gtx770. I just upgraded from the 560ti two days ago and am very pleased with the performance. I can run this Asus 770 2gig in heavy weather (ASN Next with 5 layers of Rex clouds) without the card breaking a sweat (55c with fans at idle). There is no fan noise! ....Heck even the PMDG 777 seems to really appreciate the head room this card brings! The video card is fueled by a I5 2500K @ 5.0ghz and coupled with 2133mhz ram. February 27, 201412 yr Actually, Bufferpools has more to do with the gpu than the amount of memory on the card, because if your gpu cannot keep up with the cpu it will not work. Like I said, I have a 2gb 770 and also have bp=0 in DX 10, and never had problems. We're talking about a GTX 770, which most certainly can keep up with the CPU. Mine does it every day. I have an EVGA GTX 770 4gb and also have BP=0 in DX9, and have never had any problems. A powerful CPU combined with a somewhat less powerful graphics card when utilizing BP=0, can generate artefacts on the screen. Simply because too much data is being fed directly to the GPU with no buffer. As I said though, this is compensated for by simply reducing sliders a tad. So the fact that you have a powerful CPU, and a somewhat less capable graphics card isn't a show stopper at all. You just need to be sensible with sliders, so that you aren't swamping the card with data. Then you can still reap the benefits of BP=0. However, what will kill any attempts to utilise BP=0, is not having sufficient graphics card memory, this has be known since BP=0 was first introduced, and was the major caveat to consider at the time. When I first built my 3770K rig, overclocked to 4.5, it happened to me with the GTX580. Too much data was swamping the card, thus artefacts appeared. It was simply a case of tweaking the sliders a tad and all artefacts were gone. With the combination of my new GTX 770 4gb card, and the 3770K, no issues at all with BP=0 and no slider adjustments have been required. So the statement by the poster... "the 780 will for sure allow things like bufferpools=0" is misleading, as the GTX 770 will also do the same. Just as my GTX 770 does now in DX9, and just as my GTX 580 did in DX9, both with the 3770K. I know this for a fact, from my own personal experience, from the very PC I am using now. Not to mention the plethora of other simmers out there with the 770 that are also utilising BP=0. It is true of course that the 4770K is a more powerful architecture, 8% or so I recall, but in no way do I regard that as an issue in regard to the 770 GTX with ample memory. Unless you happen to be a high slider, don't care less junkie, of course.
October 3, 201411 yr Author Hmmm, just realized I never posted back. So a couple months ago......much later than anticipated so more $$$ saved up.........I went with a 780 and while it's currently running in my old system (i7-860), the motherboard I was after has finally been released and is in my hands. So this weekend I'll be rebuilding my system and it will be a 4790K with the 780 on a Z97 motherboard.
