Over Madrid - Flight Gear 3 with Scenery V2

Very true Enrique.

I am finally finding it so good that, although I still use ELITE, and even fsx or x-plane from time to time, it is Flight gear 3 the simulator I am spending the most of my simmer time in.

I appreciate the detail of such things as the accurate day light, according to the date and place, even the precise ephemeris. The JSBSim-based flight models of some aircraft also make the potential of Flight Gear show.

The new Scenery V2 is perfect for me. I do not really need more than what it already provides.

Weather modelling is yet another strong feature in Flight Gear. One of these days I was able to soar for 2 hrs using very plausible weather effects ( thermals and ridge lift ) over a very plausible scenery area in the Iberian Peninsula I know fom my real flights, and it was simply unique!  I can't recall having had such a good time flying gliders in a simulator, other than in SilentWings...

Main Simulation Rig:

Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti, 1 TB & 500 GB M.2 nvme drives, Win11.

Lenovo TB310FU 9,5" Tablet for Navigraph and some available external FMCs or AVITABs

jcomm, you made me curious and i'm going to try it.

BTW, i need a soaring simulator, realistic as much as it can be for desktop. Of course i don't mind at all if there are some other realistic planes beside gliders...  ^_^

After reading a lot on different forums, it seems that Euroflyfs and Condor simulators are probably the best, in terms of realistic handling.

Have you tried Euroflyfs and Condor(The Competition Soaring Simulator)? I am interested in your opinion on that

UI believe you mean Aerofly FS, and Idid try it an graphically it looks good, but the flight dynamics aren't that great unfortunately, ate least in as far as the gliders are concernde :-(

Condor is a good choice, but an already very old simulation - still very good anyway, just as SilentWings ( SW runs in MAC, Linux and Windows)

Of all the glider simulations I have used, including that good old SFS 3.0 ( that never became 4.0 ) I really preferred SilentWings, specially in the latest version, where a plausible

modeling of wave was included.

The gliuders presently available for Flight Gear have very limited flight dynamics, but the K13 is still usable. There is also an As-K21 I believe, but it's been a long time since I last tried it...

If you decide to give FG a try, make sure you look at the rendering option menus and try to adapt it to your hardware the best you can. Also make sure you get, at least, the CAPs, the DR-400, the Constellation, the 707 and the Tu-154 :-)

Yes, i mean Aerofly FS (not Aerofly5 and other RC simulators from Ikarus).

Thanks, this is why i like to ask someone before i buy something...Both sims looks so convincingly.

In forums, i found a lot of topics Condor vs SW, and Condor was recommended like more reallistic then SW in general. Maybe something to do with older versions?

I'll try SW demo first. Then i will go for FG. Unfortunatelly there is no demo for Condor

Yep, Condor has no demo.

Scenery in FG is not so good as in many payware or freeware available areas for Condor.

I am sure Condor will not disappoint you, and there's a huge community and only competitions, which are Great!

Honestly, go Condor if you can. Try FG - it's for free and getting better and better :-)

I disovered aeroclub at 4km from my house, i flew C172 already, but this is prety expensive hobby for me in this moment(i moved and i'm still working on language and recognision of my studies). But they have some beautiful gliders there... This is why i need a good sim!

Thanks a lot

Soaring is, IMO, one of the most beautiful and rewarding forms of flying, and also one that I think all pilots should get instruction in!

Lufthansa used to require that the pilot candidates had a valid / active glider pilot license ( in the good old days... ).

I got mine in 1980, and have been trying to keep it current, but it's getting difficult around here...

In Europe, the Czech Republic has probably the biggest glider pilot community and almost every aerodrome has glider activity.

Regarding the simulation of soaring in Flight Gear, there are a few interesting sources of reading and addons, but they're outdated now:

I've always wondered why Flight Gear doesn't gain more popularity. It's free and open-source which should be great for add-on developers compared to the very closed nature of X-Plane and FSX/ESP.

Those screen shots are very atmospheric and make me want to try out the new version. The autogen looks a little haphazard,  but other than that the shots are atmospheric.

I will probably start a new thread, i don't want to hijack this thread... But i must say i just purchased Condor and installed Silent Wings Demo. Condor is great becouse of lessons and community, but SW has something special(other then graphics for sure  ). Feel of flying is just great. I will probably buy this one too. I learned over the years of fligh simming that you can learn different things from different quality addons.

Anyway, after some tweaking of linearity and sensivity, Condor feels pretty covincing now.

I will try Flight Gear and report back, just to be on topic next time  ^_^

Thanks again
