March 16, 201412 yr Before anyone may attempt to jump down my throat - I tried searching this topic through the forum but could not locate it. I've noticed for some time since flying the 777 that there are times when completing the ECL that some items do not automatically check within the list. There are many items that do automatically check themselves once you're carried out certain settings/actions. My questions are these: 1. When in Shutdown mode within the ECL, I notice that all items on the list automatically check as you progress through them (ie setting fuel pumps to off, setting hydraulics, etc) - however, when you release the park brake (as chocks are set) the Park Brake does not automatically check within the list like all the other items - is there a reason it's not being recognized? 2. Whilst conducting the descent checklist in the ECL, the Auto-Brake is not auto checked once you turn it to your desired setting? Is that correct? (I mention this, as whilst on the ground and in the Before Taxi checklist - the ECL automatically checks and recognizes when you turn the Auto Brake to RTO - so why doesn't it recognize your setting whilst in the air whilst completing the Descent Checklist)? March 16, 201412 yr I would believe both are normal. 1/ When shutting down on this specific parking brake check, it could be SET or RELEASED, depending on the situation, if there are chocks you don't need the Parking Brake, but if there is not you need it. So it can't be selected automatically as checked. 2/ Same as above it could be green if it is not in the RTO/OFF/IDSARM position, but depending on the condition, and what you need you might use a different level of autobrakes, and that means you have to check if it's the correct setting that you have decided and make both pilots acknowledge that setting. March 16, 201412 yr Strange. It does tick off autobrake for me on descend. Not sure about parking brake on shutdown checklist now, it's been a while. --Peter Fabian
March 16, 201412 yr Its normal. Some things are sensed by the ECL, some are not. Post# explained it very good. If the ECL would tick off Autobrakes 2....then this item would not be checked/read anymore by the pilot (cause it is green already). So if actually autobrake 3 was required for the landing....you would be in trouble! Rob Robson
March 17, 201412 yr Commercial Member I've noticed for some time since flying the 777 that there are times when completing the ECL that some items do not automatically check within the list. This is normal. If there is no grey box on the left, it will automatically sense the item. If there is a grey box, it requires you to manually check it. On the shutdown check, if I remember correctly, you have to manually check the box because it's not known if you will be leaving the parking brakes on or off. As always: aviation isn't as rigid as you'd think. Some situations call for you to leave the brakes on, and some situations have you leave the brakes off. The checklist needs to be able to accommodate both. Kyle Rodgers
March 17, 201412 yr So the question whether a C/L item is open-loop or closed-loop, could actually depend, for example, on the flightphase. What happened to AVSIM
March 17, 201412 yr Author Thanks to all for the replies. I'm a little more enlightened now in relation to my questions.
