I want to start out my flight with my BBJ sitting on the ramp of a bizjet FBO at KLAX...I've tried to input its IRS position in the CDU but it seems all it wants is an airport ID code and optionally a Gate number.

 

How can I input a lat/long string so my BBJ is positioned correctly at the target FBO?

Use your LAST POS which should be your GPS's current position. Or use SHIFT+Z. Or just use KLAX. It's close enough until you get radio updates when airborne. 

Go to pg 2 and grab the GPS coordinates.

Wait a short moment after turning on the IRSs, the input boxes will show up.

The gate position is an optional entry and it's hardly ever used anymore.  It could be used if GPS data wasn't available, but GPS is so precise and reliable now that you don't need to use that option.

 

If you're not at a gate, wouldn't it make sense to just use the GPS position?

I had some confusion as to where the IRS's thought they were located. Normally, when starting up from cold and dark I have to tell the IRS where I am. I thought if I changed locations I'd have to tell it again.

 

I started up and taxi'd to an FBO location away from a normal terminal gate. I didn't realize the IRS's were keeping up to date as I taxi'd around as the lat/long on the CDU doesn't change much when taxing...then someone told me to use Shift-Z and then I could easily see the coordinates changing so I knew when I parked my location was up to date.

Any time you align, you tell the IRS where it is as a confirmation.

 

IRS last position and GPS position may be different if the aircraft was moved.  As Matt mentioned, above, there are multiple pages for you to find the correct information.

 

The real aircraft obviously doesn't have SHIFT+Z.  Instead, they have the GPS coordinates on PG2.

If I want to place a plane in a certain unmarked location I just slew the thing to it's spot.

Quick, easy, and painless.     Then you can save the flight if you want to save that location

to reuse in the future.  No worries about the IRS, etc as long as you are still within the

coordinates that the FMC consider to be within the airport, and it will be as long as you

are still at the airport.  You can also save a different plane for the saved flight, and reload

the NGX from scratch at that location.

My startup flight uses the trike to reduce the VAS on start. Then I load whatever I want to fly.

In the real plane we just usually use the GPS position from page 2.
