Shimmering in FS9

Featured Replies

Hi, What is the main culprit in fs9 that causes trees/buildings to shimmer. Every slider I have is to the full right.

Jon

Move your mipmaps slider back to four.

If MipMaps is set to high it will cause the shimmering effect, Setting it back to 4 will help reduce the shimmering. Another thing you can do to reduce shimmering and leave the MipMap bar all the way to the right if you have an ATI Card is by enabling SUPER AA Through your Catalyst control settings. Worked wonders for me.

Both suggestions were spot on. I'm going through a retro fix at the moment and playing around with fs9 to see if I can wring the very best out of it visually. I seem to remember the aircraft rendered better than I'm getting. I'm using nVidia Inspector. Are there any secrets you know to minimise aircraft jaggies?

Hi Jon,

I've always found these settings to work well for me.

Hope that helps you a little.

That is just unbelievable. The default aircraft are as close to perfect as I've ever seen them. I have 4 Flight Simulators on this system and I'm seriously enjoying FS9. Now to find and install all my old payware stuff. Thanks everyone for your help.

Glad that helped.  Yup, FS9 is like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better with age.

Great Pic. I'm loving every little nuance. At the moment it looks like my card is rendering too well. ASV6.5 clouds are very blocky and related to the same problem water is striped.p. A bit of a mistake on my part. A trip into nVidia Inspector to pull back a few settings. A bit over zealous, me.

The adjustment of the Mipmapping is key, and since I have at ATI card I tried moving that setting from 4 to 7 and Setting AA to 8 in the CCP.  This did provide a very significant reduction to shimmering of airport sceneries as well as sharpening the detail of everything else on the screen including the aircraft.  That is the best tip I have received since I first learned of the proper config file changes some years ago.  KPGH is now crystal clear, including the scenery across the river that used to shimmer badly.  Thanks for that info!

Great shots!  You have a very sophisitacted setup and aray of add-ons.  What software allows you to have to "walk-around" viewpoints of the aircraft?
