  1. I posted above based on my experience with two weather applications. Since getting ASE, I had put aside REX except for the beautiful cloud and airport textures it provides. ASE seemed to be able to nail the current weather to the point I could look at it and get very accurate local weather from its depictions or our local airport. ASE takes a fair amount of time to assemble the weather scenario, however. When the REX update was released I installed it and let it do it's thing. It is now much faster than before and definitely faster than my ASE. It also seems to display almost exactly what I see out of my window at the time. I'm going to use it for awhile and keep comparing them for the same scenarios. In my mind noting rep-laces the fantastic cloud variety that Rex can inject into FS9. ASE, even if you like it better, still needs outsourced sky and cloud textures which REX supplies so reliably.
  2. I did the update too, but Win10 did not want me to install that file and it took quite a few tries to get it to launch. What is the update supposed to do for REX FS9? I did not notice any difference, although I have always thought the REX cloud textures were superb; the water, not so much. Their weather engine is just too slow so I use another one.
  3. Go to "windowed" mode to choose your planes and you will see them pictured and rotating. Switch back to full screen to fly. There is no way to correct this that I have seen or read.
  4. Oddly, Flight School does not run on my rig whereas FSX-SE does rather well. I decided to get a refund since it was available only within a limited time. It would have been helpful if the minimum system specs had been made available to potential purchasers. I also found that the settings were were hard to find and there was no guidance available for changing them. I could go on, but it seems that the product was released prematurely, perhaps without any beta testing that would have revealed deficiencies. There is virtually no chance I would consider the full version of the sim based on my Flight School experience. It appears that the marketplace is providing similar feedback, with only about half of purchasers giving favorable ratings. That is very telling and the DTG team clearly has work to do if their sim is every going take flight.
  5. I agree with the OP and found the product to be very poorly supported by instructional features. There definitely should be more information about minimum system requirements since this new sim is much more demanding than the Steam version of FSX. I requested a refund at the end of my first day with it (which hasn't been paid, by the way). I should have known what I was getting into from the aggregate score of the reviewers, which was almost evenly divided between thumbs up and down. I would have to conclude that there would be zero chance of my buying the full version when it is released. How successful do you think a product will be when they have disqualified a big chunk of their potential market before it even hits the shelves? A smart businessman would probably pull the plug right now. Did they learn nothing from their predecessors?
  6. My brother and I are long-time simmers. Both of us upgraded to Win 10 recently. He was very cautious about it, but has multiple systems and figured he would roll the dice on his gaming PC. I have just one system. Win 10 installed fluidly and we are each quite satisfied with the OS in general and also with the FS9 performance. His gaming system is very high end and was built by him from components. Mine is Best Buy off-the-shelf quality. This makes little difference with FS9, but he can run others sims quite well, whereas I can't. We both far prefer FS9 anyway. Don't ask me to explain why there are broadly ranging experiences with OS upgrades. I just got lucky, I guess.
  7. There is an automatic update for windows 10 that modified the fs9 software to the point that it will not launch unless you have a "no-cd required" utility installed. You also have to rename the original launch file so that it is disabled. There are two solutions: 1. Find a "no cd" file. 2. Delete the update that was automatically installed. Both require you to be able to get into the file structure of FS9. This may be too complex for you to do. I would search here for the id code for that auto update and how to delete it. That should be doable for you. Remember that FS9 is no longer a supported application and MS has no obligation to make that old software usable. There is plenty of guidance available here to do any of the above, but you will have to search for it. You are going to have to learn how to grant permissions for file modification in Windows 10. Perhaps you have someone who could personally assist you with this. Good luck.
  8. I have the same problem. Never have been able to start choppers from cold and dark. Seems like they need to idle and warm up before they can build rotor rpms. I think you have pull or rotate the collective lever also.
  9. I installed it, but had to find the file in the download and insert in in the scenery folders manually as the self installer is set up only for the default (x86) location. I found the effect only worked with the plane on or near the ground and the grass area was very jittery if the plane was parked on it. For the above reasons a returned to the stock textures.
  10. I have Walk and Follow. The usefulness of this utility is very subjective. I like the ability to change the viewing location for exploring airports and also viewing you own aircraft from any angle. If you are a fan of screen shots, this utility opens up almost limitless opportunities. See a couple of screenies below: The downside is that the user interface is a combination of keystrokes that can preoccupy the attention of the sim-pilot. That is why I use primarily on the ground. If I'm not mistaken, Active Camera has "head shake" as an option, which does add a more dynamic feel to the simming experience. I was not overly impressed when I tried their demo version. There also has been some forum comment about their product support. It would be good to hear from people who know the utility well.
  11. If there is a better freeware (or payware?) airport for FS9 than the above, please let us know. I'm amazed how well done it is.
  12. Try pressing alt+enter keys and see if that gives you what you are looking for. To tors: you might be right that win7 is better for fs9, but you are missing three generations of other improvements by going back. Really the only problem with Win10 and fs9 is the need to use a no cd crack, and using that is a big improvement also IMO.
  13. Any chance you will introduce an auto installer for your texture sets? I have never been able to correctly install everything necessary to get the FS9 to run with EVO. My scenery load get to 71% and just stops. Fortunately I have a complete backup of my system. I think there may be some misunderstanding of what files need replacing on my part. If you will forgive my saying so, the instructions could be more detailed. Please don't be offended, Many brilliant applications, FSUIPC among them, suffer from inadequate documentation. Maybe my intellect is just inadequate, as well. Thanks for what you have done for the simming community.
  14. I remember reading that Milton Shupe had some upgrades and possibly new freeware FS9 aircraft on the way. His site that is referred to in the forum stickies has nothing new that I can find. Is there another way to follow developments?
  15. You should be able to uninstall the errant update and be back to normal.
  16. Does Windows 10 cause the same problem in FSX? Yes it does. Is it annoying? Yes. Is it a game ender? No.
  17. I loaded the demo onto my Steam version of FSX and it is even more impressive than the FS9 version, with moving auto traffic and increased AI. The bad news is the heavy hit on frame rates (too heavy for me to consider buying it). Because of the price tag and the way it bogged down my scenery loading in the FS9 version, I will remove the demo, which also has large cubes rendered on each runway, KPHL freeware is better as is the freeware KBOS. I need the money for a better rig.
  18. I have tried the demo and can report that this is a very well done airport that merges beautifully with the surrounding scenery. My system is mid-range at best and did well using some demanding payware aircraft.
  19. Change to the "windowed" screen and you should be able to see your plane rotating there. This is a problem with Windows 8 and 10 and I don't believe any solution is available.
  20. This is a fantastic scenery. I was wondering if there is a way to adjust the summer grass colors to match the surrounding areas better. On my monitor the airport grounds are a green/blue and the adjoining area is green/yellow/brown, so the overlaid scenery is very apparent. In the winter, the transition is completely undetectable. I know nothing about graphics rendering (as you can instantly tell).
  21. That's an incredible amount of work. Can't wait to see it completed. Thanks for all of your contributions to the simming community.
  22. Following onto my prior post, I did finally get the Soft Clouds add-on running after two days of slow communication with REX tech support. I'm not sure what the nay-sayers in prior posts are seeing but the combo of REX, Overdrive (which is an advanced texture package) and the new Soft Clouds is a world apart from the stock cloud textures. I reverted to the stock textures and then compared them to the full fs9 REX combination. I would say it is similar to the difference between stock aircraft textures and, say, Carenado's offerings. If I can figure out how to take screen shots in Windows 10, I'll try to get some examples posted. Perhaps Soft Clouds can be used without the other REX sky textures, and that might not add much to stock sky textures. Give me some more time and I will take a look at those options. Finally, the value equation may not work for some here. I don't throw money at my setup either. Ten dollars and some change are what is asked for the Soft Clouds option. I don't regret paying that.
  23. I just bought it from REX but they have failed to provide a link to the downloadable. Great products, but their customer service is the most convoluted thing imaginable. Why should I have to go and post my problem on their forum to get an answer? Just answer the friggin' email.
  24. Try reloading the the one and only Microsoft service pack update for FS9. I believe it has some bridges included. You may have to search a little for the update, but their should be references to it on this forum.
