777 pros please help

Starting from "cold and dark" in the 777,  I'm following guides to the letter,  once I achieve engine start then shutdown the APU - everything turns off and bells go off.   I also noticed that once the engine starts I have no thrust in them as well.  Is this a setting in the FMC or just something Im doing wrong?  Please help.

Thanks

First, there's a known issue with the cold and dark (and custom) panel states.  There's a pinned forum post at the top of this subforum that says "read before posting."  It would be worthwhile to heed that advice.  It's linked here for your convenience:

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/418750-pmdg-777-issue-tracking-thread-read-before-posting/

Second, it sounds like power isn't transferring properly.  I'm not sure if you're using the default cold and dark panel state, or you created it yourself, but it sounds like the engine GENs are somehow off.  When you're turning the APU off, the plane finds no other active power source, so everything is dropping to the battery, which has an associated aural warning.

The 777 is a very smart plane, and it also has the possibility to let you in on its inner workings.  The synoptic pages (on the lower display unit) can help you see this.  Take a screenshot of the ELEC page and post it here with the APU still on, just after the engines have started.

make are that the switches click back to the normal position before you shut the apu off. Also watch the eicas screen and make sure both engines spool up to 20%

Here are some screens before and after.

Your GEN DRIVEs are disconnected.  Not sure how you managed that, but that's something that needs to be fixed via the PMDG SETUP> menus on the FMC (as it's a ground maintenance only task).

Check your failures and you should be set.

Additionally, avoid using the C/D Panel state.

Turns out the issue was the state of the last aircraft I had loaded into FSX causes this to happen.

Hi, Tony,

Do you have FSX set up so that the default Friday Harbor/Trike-Ultralite flight appears at the opening window?  You don't have to actually load that flight, but it should be visible in the opening window until you choose a PMDG 777 and airport (or load a previously saved flight from that window).  If you have some other aircraft showing at the opening window, especially a complex add-on (including but not limited to any PMDG aircraft), you are likely to have unpredictable problems.  Likewise, it is risky to reload the 777 on top of itself or one 777 repaint on top of another.  When I want to switch liveries or reload a PMDG 777 flight, I load the default Friday Harbor flight and then load the flight and/or aircraft I want.  Even better: shut down and restart FSX.

And, as Kyle said, don't use the PMDG-supplied Cold & Dark state.

If you want to create your own, try the following:

1) Delete any startup panel state showing in the PMDG setup window.  2) Close FSX and then restart it.  3)  Load your favorite PMDG 777.  It should load with engines and all systems on.  4) Set up the condition of the aircraft the way you like it, including cold and dark if you prefer. 5) Save that panel state with a suitable name.  6)  Set the startup panel state to the same name you just used to save your panel state.  Close FSX.  The next time you load a 777, it should come up in the same state you set up, and hopefully without any bugs!

Mike,

Thanks for the well detailed response.  That is indeed how I had FSX setup.  I went ahead and loaded and saved my own panel state to avoid these problems.  Thanks again.

The ONLY time those generator switches (Covered ones with yellow "DRIVE" lights) should be off is if they are pretty much on fire, or in response to an abnormal checklist (probably related to electrical shorting).

Not as part of your shutdown procedure. Those buttons need to be in the normal position even if you are fully shutting the aircraft down to cold and dark. The only way to recover power from them is to open the big cowls on those engines, and have a mechanic get inside the engine and start poking around with some tools.

Someone wanted me to do a demo on my youtube channel of a cold/dark start. I have half a mind to do the cold/dark start at a hangar/remote stand, get it up to the point of APU running, and then find some way of getting GSX or some editing/fu to show the position of "Brake Rider" as the aircraft is towed to the gate. Then put the chocks on, connect the ground power and power down hydraulics and APU again, and make very obvious that the "Brake Rider" is not the pilot that flies the flight (dispite being in the captains seat with Hydraulics/APU on while the aircraft is being towed to the stand).
