My 10ish beginner questions re AI traffic

Featured Replies

I'm looking for some help with regards to AI Traffic.  I'm pretty new to FSX and  just started to integrate AI Traffic with WoAI and love the added immersive experience with RW airlines.  I've been doing a bunch of research with regards to the traffic but still have a ton of questions.

1- There are some traffic packages that are no longer available via WoAI which I'd like to add myself.  I came across this older but very simple tutorial http://forum.mutleyshangar.com/index.php/topic/1896-tutorial-adding-custom-ai-traffic/ which describes the process of adding custom traffic for FS9 I believe.  Can I basically do the same thing for FSX, and can it still be compiled with the tools that came with the WoAI installer?  I realize that I would still be compiling FS9 traffic rather than FSX, but that's ok because all of my WoAI packages are FS9 traffic files if I understand correctly.

2- I also remember seeing somewhere online that there is a modification that can be made to the aircraft/traffic files before compiling that allows one to adjust at which slider setting the flight appears, but I can't seem to find that information anymore and it isn't mentioned in the above tutorial.  Does anybody have any inputs with regards to this?

3- Any idea what the default WoAI packages have their slider settings at for when their aircraft appear?  Is it one setting for all of them or random so it will actually be adjustable (as I hope it is so that the FSX sliders actually work at various settings since I have quite an underpowered computer at this point in time).

4- Is it possible to decompile a WoAI package to add some new custom flights to a flight plan and then recompile it to include this new flight amongst all the others?

5- If I do add my own specific flight to a flightplan file, how do I specify departure/arrival times?  Is there a tutorial somewhere for that?

6- Arre there any negative consequence to accidentally "extracting/compiling" the same WoAI package twice (I did this with 2 of my downloaded airlines by accident).  Will it double the flights?  Not sure how this works.

7- My "home airport" is CYYZ.  Right now aircraft park all over the place at the 2 terminals as opposed to their appropriate gates.  My understanding is that this is not something that is addressed in the traffic files at all.  I have found a decently-reviewed freeware CYYZ addon.  If I install it should it affect where the WoAI aircraft park and correct their gate assignments?   If so would this include the GA terminals and giant FedEx cargo terminal?

8- If I create a custom flight, is there a place where I state the parking gate somewhere in the aircraft file?

9- Is there a way to test all the downloaded traffic packages I have to see if they're correctly installed and will appear in FSX?

10- Finally, is there any benefit to converting all of my FS9 traffic files to FSX?  Right now the only benefit I can find is that the current FS9 plans being loaded means that any FSX plans don't load, which means I don't get boat or road traffic as far as what I've read, so switching to all FSX traffic would fix that, but I don't really have a system that should be running much AI traffic anyway so that's no big deal for now.  So should I wait for my next system to bother, or is there another benefit?

I think that's it for now.

Thanks,

Corey

Not sure all your questions can be answered. However, the main AI programs are MYTRAFFICX 54C, Ultimate Traffic 2, WOAI and the highly disputed ICE Traffic. All have recent or current real world schedules and there is ample information about them here. The latter two are freeware. You can assign airlines to gates at any airport with programs like say AFX which adjusts the AFCAD . It takes time but worth it.  Then if you are familiar with any airport you can place the AI flight accordingly. The recommended FSX traffic setting is 25-30% which will provide a realistic traffic density on the ground and in the sky. Too much AI traffic does affect performance, so it is  a balancing act. Hope it helps a little.

The WOAI "package" concept makes it easy to add AI on an airline basis.  But there is much more available, if you are willing to devote some time and effort to it.

There is a utility program, AI Flight Planner (AIFP) which will allow you to do as much custom, or semi-custom AI as you want.  AIFP opens up all the flight plans and aircraft models/paints you find in the library.  Some of the better flight plans are integrated with AIFP, such that you don't have to hunt down the required models and paints (the hardest part of doing you own AI).

WOAI package installer provides an advanced or expert mode, that simply copies the needed files into a location of your choosing (not in FSX) and you can then use AIFP on the flight plans to customize them just like any other flight plan.

Personally, I use AIFP to compile all flight plans for FSX.  AIFP can take an existing compiled FS9 AI traffic file and recompile it to FSX without having to mess with the actual flight plans.

hello and welcome,

here are few replies, hope they are accurate, others will probably complete and correct any errors

1. the basic operations needed to add traffic are the same in FSX. To compile them you can use the amazing AIFP program which is more recent that the older TTools, it will compile them in native FSX and it will also automatically change what should be changed to fit FSX (for example some airports who have new icao codes since FS9, day numbering is also different i think). As for Woai i think that if you set FSX as target once you load the package, the final bgl will be in FSX format.

2. in the flightplan.txt file there is an entry with a % that you will notice immediately. This will tell at which percent the flight will appear (example 1% it will always appear, at 99% it will only appear if traffic is set at 100% in fsx)

3. there is an option when you install woai packages to do it 'manually' (see 4), this will extract the files and you will be able to see inside the flightplan.txt the % used for the traffic slider

4. yes, there is an option to install manually and decompile (check both options 'install manually' and 'decompile flightplans')

5. in the extensive documentation coming with AIFP (see 1) you will get all the information you need about flight departure and arrival times for traffic

6. i don't know, haven't tried, but you can probably check if the aircraft entry in the aircraft.cfg is entered twice with 2 different 'fltsim' numbers (but maybe woai have tested this and it will cause no prob)

7. parkings are set in the afcad file of the airport so you are right, but the aircraft entry must also have correct codes set in the aircraft.cfg file (atc_parking_codes=). I think also that FSX tries to do its best, but in the end it will also park planes taking other stuff into account (gate size, free parking slots, ....) so you probably going to have some little discrepancies even with a perfect afcad and aircraft.cfg. No idea about that specific CYYZ addon, but hey just try it, it's probably lot better than the default (and easy to remove if you dont like) :P

8. no i don't think you can do that

9. AIFP has some tools to check the traffic files for correct structure, i also use 'ai aircraft editor' which is very good for this task (both program easy to find in google, ai aircraft editor is also available in the avsim library)

10 i don't see why you wouldn't want to convert them to FSX formats, maybe others will give you reasons but for me just gogogogo, you have fsx use fsx traffic files :)
