February 18, 200521 yr Fortunately, he has no problem with it, but you should have asked before making them available.
February 18, 200521 yr Chris,I did infact assume (yes I know, assumption is a bad thing) , that your "no unofficial "lite" version" did mean from you, and I assumed that the community could modify them. The good news is that all the reports so far have been very good, the detail is almost indistingushable from the original, and the people who were having stutters are now not, my main problem is that if the request rate keeps up I am not going to be able to keep up.Dan.
February 18, 200521 yr LOL! :-lol "...if the request rate keeps up I am not going to be able to keep up." Well Dan, welcome to the world of freeware distribution. :) That rate could continue to go up indeed. It requires a great deal of your time and effort to satisfy everyone for free; doesn't it? :-beerchugThank you for being considerate enough to share your improvements with others. :)As I've said, I will allow no further releases under the AEU title. "almost" indistinguishable is just outside of personal minimums. Thanks guys.
February 18, 200521 yr Chris,Sure, I totally understand your position, no problem.I am fully aware of the world of freeware distribution, I have been providing files, both through AVSIM and my own website for many years, but unfortunatly providing files via e-mail to a large number of people is not really possible, so I am going to have to ask that no more people request these files, I just can't provide them via e-mail in the volume the requests are coming, and belive me there is a massive demand. Thanks for the work you have done with your AEU series, they are a great gift to the community. Many ThanksDan.
February 18, 200521 yr >I also experienced stutters with the AEU7 package. My>workaround was similar to John F's: reduce the size of the>textures using DXTBMP and Paint Shop Pro. May do the same thing if I download it because I too get hesitations with AEU 6. But don
February 18, 200521 yr Dan,Could you please give instructions here as to what it was that you did to the textures; we could then make the adjustments as necessary...I have tried resizing, but am having difficulty in removing the alpha and mips!I hope Chris won't object as his textures are very fine, but do produce a fair bit more stuttering at times than I am happy with!Thanks....
February 19, 200521 yr There are 32 texture files contained in AEU 7.BTW: Dan I hope I didn't offend you. I was trying to be funny, not antagonistic. ...poorly worded on my behalf. ;)As I recall, I actually suspected that you had previously authored works for the community based on some of the dialogue. I just found the moment irresistible, and felt that I could relate. :-lol
February 19, 200521 yr Had the same problem with the pauses on a very fast rig with AEu 6 and 7. Just overlayed AEU Express 6, over 7, and they are gone. I don't think it is the terminal textures, but rather the runway and taxiway textures as evidenced by the fact that once I overlayed the 6 files of AEu 6 over AEU 7, problems were gone. Arrington, to make an AEU 7 Express version, I would just include the smaller AEU 6 Express files with everything else the same in AEU 7.CB
February 19, 200521 yr Guys,Remember, Chris didn't make the express version of 6, I did. He just gave me his good-graces to go ahead with them, and I packaged them to his specifications.Once I updated to v9.1, I was able to use the full version of 6 without a performance hit at all, and I see the same results here with 7 (I attribute this to the fact that I'm running SATA RAID-0, instead of a regular IDE or SATA setup). I also shut down the active virus-scan on ZoneAlarm until I'm done with the simulator.
February 19, 200521 yr Author Your software works fine for me. I have a 256meg card though. It does take me back to pre-256 days with texture load delays, and oddities like that, but that is a great segue to my point.Use em or loose em, I say.Use Chris's software or don't. Modify the heck out of it, or don't. But either use it or loose it. Don't sit on the fence and say, "Chris, if only you had...I would use it, if you changed...Can't you just..."Chris may not want to release version 8 if it becomes just too much of a hassle. My 2 cents,bt
June 12, 200520 yr I can also confirm huge pauses with AEU7. I just installed default textures back, and these pauses disappeared. Please note my highend system.
June 12, 200520 yr Honestly, about a week after I made the previous post, I made the textures into my own 'lite' version again. I spent the better part of a week also changing any 32-bit plane textures into DTX3 ones.I just upgraded to 2GB of Corsair TWINX-3200C2 memory, and with the compressed textures, I get 38-56 FPS with real-world weather (and my antivirus turned off).I'm quite pleased now with how my system runs. Sure, I'd like to change the twin 6600GT's to 6800 Ultras, and take my A64 3500+ and bump that up to an FX55, but I got bills to pay... :)Scott
