AEU7--Am I the only One with Major Pauses?

Featured Replies

Thanks again Chris for a great addon, as per my previous post, any performance issues are very minimal on my system.Bruceb

Chris, even though I'm one of those who experiences stutters with AEU7, please don't feel downhearted. Your new textures, even at reduced resolution, are very much better than the defaults and have improved both the look and feel of the airports and airfields in the game tremendously. I am most definitely not unhappy with them!

The solution would be to have the changes applied to only selected (destination) airport. I don't know if it is at all possible but that might greatly reduce the performance problem.57,000 is the number of downloads. I am going to experiment this weekend, but I think it will be quite simple to make an unofficial "express" version. Some of the textures can easily be reduced in size, whilst keeping a great deal of the detail, I will have a play this weekend and see what happens, if I get decent results I will send you the files Chris.Dan.

Ok, I have come up with something, I hope is hasnt "destroyed" the nature of AEU7, but I believe it still has a lot of the detail there, but the file sizes are greatly reduced (some of the textures down from 1.3mb to 130kb).If anyone wants to try it out mail me [email protected].

Well, I have quite a response, and the feedback so far is good, I hope that I have maintained the quality as Chris wanted and just want to offer a "lighter" solution as Chris's work is to good to be passed up.Dan.

I don't have any problems with AEU7. I think Chris did a great job with the environment. My system is a P4 3.6GHz with HT and 1GHz of DDR RAM. It would be very easy to see if AEU7 is the cause. Simply reinstall the backup textures and see if the stutters/pauses still occur.Jim

The fact is, I have always wanted the product to be better, and I appreciate that the others here want the product to be better. I look forward to people constructively helping me to achieve that goal."57,000 is the number of downloads. That may not necessarily be the number of the final users."Michael,What you have said here is not constructive; it is an obvious truth. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.Let us assume that the actual number of users is exactly half of that number. If the number of downloads reflects the total number of users for my product proportionately to the other files listed, then what difference does it make? Regardless of how many users there really are, it takes quite a few satisfied users to EQUAL that many downloads. I'm simply saying that (to me) while there is a stuttering issue, it is obviously not enough of a hindrance to sacrifice visual quality any further. I've been doing these upgrades for a while now, and can find no solution that I am happy with. As the designer of this product, it is my mandate to determine where the design limits are, and I have already made that determination.

Please upload these when you can.Thanks.Randall

> If anyone wants to try it out mail me . . .I am not a "flamer!" I did not think that I'd ever write a letter like this but, Dan, I believe that you have crossed *that* line. What people do in the privacy of their home can't be controlled but when someone offers to distribute modifications which the original author has stated are against his wishes and his copyrights, that is too much.I hope that this thread disappears.Sorry but that's my opinion.R-

Hi Ron,Yes, you are entirely intitled to your opinion, and if Chris doesnt want me to send me textures to people who ask then I would stop doing it immediately as I wish not to cause Chris's valuable work harm, that is in no way my intention. All I am trying to achieve is making Chris's excellent work available to those simmers who either a) do not have the required horse power to run them "as is", or :( have a powerfull system (which I have) but are plauged by stutters. As I said, I mean no ill intent, and if Chris has one single issue then I would stop immediatly.Dan.

I did the resize things with most of the textures, I dont use every one but do use the airport buildings, concrete, and runway textures. All can be resized with very little loss of detail. I deleted the mips, the alpha and changed the size and now everything is running very smoothly. The concrete and asphalt textures can be resized very low and still look good. I really like the new building textures and just cut them in half, lost the mips and alpha and its still a nice improvement over even the last version of AEU. I had the stutters with the default package also but not now! Chris, Dont beat yourself up over it, this is still a landmark project and very nice enhancement. Even with the resize its a very big improvement over the default garbage! Now I just wish we could get rid of the too tall hangars and three and four story buildings which look kind of silly at some of the airports.Hornit

Forgive me and let me clarify--Please upload these IF Chris gives permission.Randall

Hi Dan,You said:> As I said, I mean no ill intent, and if Chris has one single issue then I would stop immediatly. But Chris had previously (in this thread) stated, "I wish that I could do more, but I would rather you not use AEU at all than to see it reduced to rubble. In my heart, it is a very special upgrade with a very specific level of detail, and that's the way that I wish for it to remain. There will be no authorized "express" version of 7."It seems to me that it would have been more polite to give Chris time to reply before you offered your changes to the forum. R-

Okay, okay guys... slow down and breathe everybody. :)Here's the deal. When I say there will be no "authorized" express version, here's what I mean: I don't mind if you guys want to pass these adjustments between your selves. What I don't want is anything uploaded to a server, with the AEU authorized logo on it, where the original 7.01.03 archive is not intact. From this point, I want anything that is apparently an official AEU release to contain within it the level of detail that I originally intended. That's all, no big deal. :-beerchugGroup hug.
