Having a problem with the FMC, flight plan, and descent

When I am reaching the top of descent point during crs altitude, I choose my approach for the destination. Then I click execute once I choose an approach, but the approach plan doesnt connect to the flight plan? It is just a blank space in between both plans. Wierd eh? Don't I need a transition point in between so it can all connect? When i go to the legs page, in between my normal flight plan and the approach plan, there is a line that says "flight plan discontinued". What do i type in so it can connect together? Can someone please explain this to me. Can someone tell me where I can find the ILS frequency's for runways I want to land? Is there a page on the internet or something? LASTLY, (sorry for so many questions), how do I know what my glideslope should be during descent?

This is a discontinuity.

 

Sometimes discontinuitys should be connected. You can tell this if there are 2 of the same waypoint (one before discontinuity and one after) in the same plan. 

For instance (LEGS PAGE)

In this case you would click on the second instance of "LIZZI" (under the discontinuity) and then click on the first instance of LIZZI

For ILS frequency and course, you can double-check the INIT REF page in the FMC. (press the button that has INIT REF written on it).

This page includes the place where you select which flap you will be landing with, and the Vref speed. There will be a warning on approach telling you that Vref not selected, and the green flap indications that show you at what speed to deploy flaps won't work correctly past about flap 20.

 

You could also look up charts online. Charts show more information than just ILS and course information, and include Minimum decent altitudes, decision altitudes, the height you should pass markers or DME distances at to crosscheck that the Glideslope is operating correctly etc. They also have aerodrome charts which are like a map of where taxiways and runways and parking areas are on the airfield. Proper SID/STAR charts are usually also available including instructions that may not be in the FMC, such as locations where Air Traffic Control will provide vectors (which are often where Discontinuites appear on the FMC! because the FMC can't provide Air Traffic Control vectors for you)

 

 

I use a website called www.google.com to do a search.

For instance, if I wanted charts for Melbourne, where the ICAO code for the airport is YMML, I would go to www.google.com and type in "YMML Charts" (with the quotation marks) and press enter, and then read the list of results for something that looks informative.

 

In that specific case there is a link to Airservices Australia AIS DAP Aerodrome Information Publication Australia - Departure and Approach procedures (DAP)

 

This is the official real-world Departure and Approach procedure charts, which is probably a good source.

 

There are some other sources, but most of these are outdated. Whereas the first link is from May29 2014, the other ones are from 2008, 2010 etc. If you are using up-to-date airac data such as that from Navigraph, then you should use the most recent and up to date source. I find the official sources are usually best, although you may need to acknowledge some copyright type agreements to view them. In general these are free to view/use (but not to sell, or use in commercial applications for profit etc).

 

 

In america I often use http://flightaware.com/ and type in the airport code on the left hand side "Airport Tracker/Info" field, and then click View Info, and then click "IFR Plates" tab. Here is some info about Chicago O'Hare KORD as an example.
