July 23, 201411 yr Commercial Member This is where I go for nvidia settings: http://www.simforums.com/forums/drivers-nv-inspector-fsxcfg-complete-guide_topic36586.html Only the adjustment to the Transparency AA makes any changes, whether FSX set to AA=ON or AA=OFF. Generally with most aircraft we don't need the move up to sparse grid, but due to an internal scaling situation some planes do need sparse grid or they look crumpled unless zoomed in, these work OK until we zoom out, sparse grid cures that. ...another thing they missed, the triple buffer is recommended on for vsync set, although there's the barest of difference. July 23, 201411 yr For what it is worth, 8XS AA and 2XSGSS gives me good visuals in FSX. Couple that with 8XAF (or 16X.. I prefer 8) for scenery texture filtering. Bert
July 24, 201411 yr Commercial Member Well Bert, I went through all the options shown in your link. Take the Texture filtering setup, that doesn't work, whatever values selected makes no difference. As soon as you set any texture filter mode in FSX, bilinear will do, the filtering works. But still no changes can be seen by altering any of the texture filter settings in NI with FSX filter on or off. The Anti-aliasing section, here again no changes can be seen in FSX with or without FSX AA set, until the Transparent settings are changed. Face it, even in the document it stresses that to use the transparent AA will slow down the card, but setting the regular AA makes no change to the performance - maybe there is no change in performance because it does nothing? Transparent works because the FSX screen is made from transparent images stacked up as I mentioned earlier. ...the sparse grid sampling is only required for certain aircraft. Some aircraft look poorly anti-aliased unless the view is zoomed in. As I mentioned earlier, due to a scaling situation within the sim, some planes need sparse grid or look like AA is not set. The sparse grid setting takes samples from a wider area to improve the AA with the view zoomed out. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
July 24, 201411 yr Commercial Member 'none' or 'treat override any app setting..' makes no difference. Why not try it out. Try this: in the sim, set filtering to none, and set AA off, then in NI try any setting without using Transparency. ...can't get AA to work? tried filtering? Can't get that going either? Funny. Now try setting filtering in the sim. Now we have filtering but no amount of changing NI settings changes it. Now try setting AA in the sim, and then make changes to NI without touching transparency, no AA changes? It was pretty simple to test all this out really. You'll need certain planes to try out sparse grid, for example, stock planes and PMDGs don't need it. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
July 24, 201411 yr As far as I am aware, the normal routine with Nvidia cards in FSX is to set AA to "Off", and then configure it using Nvidia Inspector. However, I had to switch AA to "On" in FSX, otherwise it would not work at all. July 24, 201411 yr Just did... as a test. FSX AA=off NI AA=8XS, no SGSS Works! Still like 8XS + 2XSGSS better.. Bert
July 24, 201411 yr Commercial Member post your FSX AA=off setup in NI then Bert.... ...i'm waiting... there's no AA in the sim with; behaviour flags none, override app setting, and 8xSQ, and FSX AA=off. Pretty straightforward test. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
July 24, 201411 yr NI Antialiasing section: None Off Default Override 8XS Disabled Off / Multisampling Allowed Off Off Bert

Since the FSX screen is layers of transparent images, and scaling within the sim you need FSX AA=on. There's no amount of AA going to work other than with the Transparency Multisampling, or Transparency Supersampling and AA=on in the sim. NI Antialiasing section: None Off Default Override 8XS Disabled Off / Multisampling Allowed Off Off Exactly, assuming FSX AA=off, there's no AA, take a look at an outside view of the wings and zoom out. July 24, 201411 yr Sorry to disagree.. AA works just fine with the above settings (on my system). Bert
July 24, 201411 yr Commercial Member ...Still like 8XS + 2XSGSS better.. What you find is the 8xS bit can go and you are left with the same result, but you will need to turn FSX AA on for the 2xSGSS to work. The thing about sparse grid, is that it does what it says on the tin, it takes a sparse sample. So as you can imagine this knocks down the resolution a tiny bit. I leave it set since i'm swapping planes a lot. Sorry to disagree.. AA works just fine with the above settings (on my system). Perhaps we're not talking about the same thing, I'm talking about reducing the jagged look on straight edges. Here's a thought; try setting yours up the way I showed you, you might be shocked. It could be you've been missing out on properly smoothly rendered screens... I selected a random shot, made into a .png. stock CRJ, 1920x1200, FSX AA=on, TS=4x Sparse Grid Supersampling, FTXG+V+oLC Here Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
July 24, 201411 yr Hey Steve, No idea why your rig turns off AA altogether when not enabled in FSX, but in that case leave it set to "on". ^_^ In my case the picture is properly smoothed and rendered with AA on or off in FSX, but set to override in NI. Just one of those things, I guess! Bert
July 24, 201411 yr Commercial Member Post your shot then Bert... Hey Steve, No idea why your rig turns off AA altogether when not enabled in FSX, but in that case leave it set to "on". ^_^ In my case the picture is properly smoothed and rendered with AA on or off in FSX, but set to override in NI. Just one of those things, I guess! You're wasting your time Bert, let's see a shot of your miraculous system, set to FSX AA=off, and no transparency AA. Items in FSX appear at different scales on transparent backgrounds as I keep saying, and so post AA does not work. Remember that Chris also found he needed AA on. You're the odd one out. Steve Waite: Engineer at codelegend.com
