I want to love X-plane 10 but so many things to hate

Recommended Posts

You can call that a missed opportunity, but in the end you have to accept it.

Many have done both, and are just sitting on the fence (sort of where I am at) or have moved on. For some, X-plane hits the spot, but historically that's a niche of a tiny niche, and there's little sign that will change anytime soon.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

I'd say the biggest problem with XPlane is the development speed. I remember buying it in the 90s when it was Mac only.

Today they are on version 10, but honestly not a whole lot has changed over a 20 years.

I guess you are comparing only flight model or some particular point of view....

Only from v9 and v10 its a whole different sim.

The only thing still bothers me is promoting a feature (ATC)... and after years not being even functional.

(No excuse for the "you are off course " thing... they could even "disable" that part of the code)

That's, IMHO an absurd statement. Take a look at this images I posted recently and tell me if this looks like a 20 year old sim.

Sorry, i know this isn't the screenshot forum but a picture is worth a thousand words as they say! X-plane, like FSX is not the best it could be out of the box. It needs a few addons (free OSM and photo scenery) and some tweaks to get the best out of it. It comes with cloud and object shadowing, sloped runways and atmospheric effects - so all the tools are there for the sim to have the most potential.

Simheaven has all the OSM and photo scenery you need - http://simheaven.com (the home page has the information on what to download).

Just make sure the addons are in the following order in your scenery_packs.ini file (located in the custom scenery folder).

  1. own, custom airports
  2. original airports (Aerosoft …)
  3. regional sceneries (New Zealand Pro)
  4. OSM sceneries
  5. add-ons, libraries (Europe Library, SeaTraffic,OpenSceneryX…)
  6. photo sceneries (ZL16, ZL17, Areas)
  7. mesh files (HD Scenery Mesh v2)

The following youtube guide is for the atmospheric scattering effects (haze etc.) for added realism.

Great site, but too bad no North American scenery other than a few cities unless I'm blind.

Hi Robert, yes that's true. It's mostly geared towards european cities for now, but i see them releasing more and more city specific OSM in the future (it's early days!).

Here's the list for USA city area photo scenery:

The OSM i use is the continent series (containing less objects but still ok):

XPX, good as it is, is not ideal for Heavy Drivers like myself, mainly good for small and GA aviation.

Hopefully PMDG's commitment to develop aircraft for x-plane will be the first of many!

The Boeing 777 Worldliner professional doesn't do the job ?

Not without competent ATC and ESPECIALLY no commercial AI traffic.
