Orbx Pacific Northwest Tour, Leg 1: The Oregon Coast

Orbx PNW Tour, Leg 1: the Oregon Coast

This week's flight starts at the familar Bowerman Airport in Hoquiam, Washington and takes us down the Pacific coast before turning inland to finish at Hobby Field in Creswell, Oregon, at the southern end of the Wiliamette valley.

After taking off from Bowerman (KHQM), a well-known airport to most Orbx afficionados, we head south along the coast before meeting the mouth of the Columbia River, where we land at Astoria Regional Airport (KAST).  From Astoria we continue south along the coast past the small resort towns of Seaside and Cannon Beach before turning a short distance inland, to our next stop Tillamook (KTMK), although FSX carries its former designation of S47. A short leg then takes us to Pacific City State (KPFC) and the smallest runway on our route at 1875ft x 30ft.  We go on to the attractive Siletz Bay State Airport (S45) before continuing to Newport Municipal Airport (KONP).  The final coastal leg takes us to Florence Municipal (6S2).  From Florence we turn inland crossing the Coast Range mountains, with our final destination being Hobby Field in Creswell (77S).  This airport at the south end of the Willamette valley will make an excellent jumping-off point for Leg 2: the Valley and the Gorge.

Navigation isn't too much of a challenge on this leg, at least until we turn inland to Creswell.  Just keep the ocean on your right, the land on your left and you can't go far wrong.  The last three stops are all at lit fields; perfect timing would see us flying through the Coast Range and into the valley as the sun goes down.

As this leg isn't short, 229nm, I suggest that a slightly faster GA aircraft would be most appropriate.  Our target airspeed should be getting close to 150kts.This might be a good opportunity to fly your favorite twin, otherwise a higher performance single.

I will be flying the Carenado C337 Skymaster, in this lovely paint by our very own Mr Attwood. Note: if you also intend to fly the Carenado Skymaster, please apply the multiplayer fix to avoid flooding (and the wrath of Ron!).  A link to this is found in the Digital ThemePark aircraft list, which is linked in the TeamSpeak Casual Flights channel.

Speaking of the C337, are any of you a little less than impressed with the GPS? I modded mine and it looks like so:

I've uploaded the whole panel folder in the Teamspeak browser. All you need to do is back up your original panel folder and plonk this one in.

Unless you are an RXPer of course!

TJ,

Would be great to have you along.  All you really need is FSX and Teamspeak up and running. When you're on TS we can help get you set up on the multiplayer.  The FSX default Beechcraft Baron will be fine for today's flight, if you don't have much else installed.  ORBX Pacific Northwest scenery, if you have it, will make it all look better but isn't essential.  Remember UK time is UTC +1 right now, so we start at 8pm.

It's been plonked.  That's rather an improvement, isn't it.  I've noticed on a number of aircraft the in-VC GPS displays don't show up well, I wasn't sure if it was just my set-up.  I almost always run with the GPS popped up on a second monitor anyway, but this mod certainly improves the VC immersion.  Thanks Ron! :Applause:

Let me know if there are any other aircraft GPSs that give you grief. Maybe I can help.

Ron, You do not have my Collins "NAV" texture fix installed

The right hand Collins radio should say NAV..

Bert

Of course I'll post some pictures.

It looks like there will be a world of hurt. A bunch of Oscar Duce's is not (at this time) good for your health. Just wait till they call the neighborhood big bullies in. Ron, Bert, Jeff, Nick & myself.

Oh MY! Whatis that? TJ shows up with twice the horsepower! :-) Seen one STOL take-off, straight up! The only thing holding on was the propellor.

Sometimes there just isn't enough room. Ron is back taxiing from the intersection of RNWY 32 and Main St. @ S45 (Siletz Bay State Airport) in the fine town of Glenedan Beach after trying to land Navy style. No cables here.

I believe I seen that aeroplane at Cabin Creek (I08) a few weeks ago.. It's good to see that the landing gear was re-attached again. Oh! and a new prop too!

Roman, I look forward to your pictorial essays almost as much as the flight itself. Nice job. :good:
