September 5, 201411 yr .....I'm just lining up for my first take-off of the day within P3D v2.3 As I lined up, sipping my coffee, I pondered...."What if this was 1998, and I was lining up for my roll....using v2.3, .....I wonder what our hobby would look like, at say, September 5th, 2014?!?" Would we be now, sitting in a chair, with a head-set on....and AFFORDABLE to the average flight simulation enthusiast....and have our very own and SAFE.... Cerebral Direct, stimulation of our visual, aural, tactile, etc centers of our brain....a la' Arnold Schwarzenegger? I wonder.....this is what that first jolt of my morning 'cuppa' does.... Ok...got clearance, and am ready to roll, into a beautiful P3D v2.3 Dawn...... Cheers, all! Mitch
September 5, 201411 yr Thinking like this makes me excited to see where the Oculus is going. I can't wait for the consumer version and my Dev version will be here soon hopefully. High Def, in cockpit feeling of being there is a dream for everyone I think. I hear the Rift is pretty good now but lower res, so VFR is pretty much the only way to go, but the Devs are coming out with more and more software to make things better like reading text with them. One of my first flights will be with the Piper....can't wait. I too sit back and wonder what our hobby will bring in 10 years, where we will be....what kind of hardware will we need, or not need due to VR and stuff. Exciting times. William Sequeira
September 5, 201411 yr In 1998 we had FS98 and that was succeeded by FS2000, FS2002, FS2004 then FSX and onto to P3D So therefore FS98 was what it looked like in 1998 Matthew Kane I'm Dyslexic, what's an error to you is not to me

Yes...we had the interim....but WHAT if we would have had P3D v2.3 RELEASED in not 2014, but IN the year 1998...where could we be have sitting, today...in 2014, in the drive to virtual-as-real-as-it-might-get..." September 5, 201411 yr If we had p3dv2 in 98 we would have got like like .0001 fps lol but I get ur point I'm looking forward to VR gloves which will simulate the Feel of knobs and switches ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
September 8, 201411 yr I think the OP means that if technology in 1998 was advanced enough to handle P3D V2 at that time. Then what kind of technology would we have today 16 years later? That is a very interesting question and it will be very interesting to see what will come in. Maybe some sort of glasses and you see from your eye the full size cockpit and are able to move switches, turn knobs with the help of some sensors on your body? We will see... Future has a lot to offer but also unfortunately liberalism and weapons are also going forward...

September 8, 201411 yr I see where he's going with this, and I will play along...kinda. No doubt, we'd likely see something far more amazing than now...but would we? I'm not so sure that what we would see would be light years ahead of what we are currently seeing. I think back to 1998, and I think of buying FS98- my first flight sim I owned- and then I remember how so incredibly excited and *obsessed* I became with simming and aviation and I actually changed my college major to aviation. ALL THAT while flying in FS98. Add-ons were about 95% freeware and payware was not only rare, but rarely all that good. That thankfully changed not long after, but where I'm going with this is that we would be hard-pressed to enjoy FS98 now compared to what we have. There are times when looking at some screenshots, it's very hard to not think it's a real world photo. We are very close to "arriving" to that kind of virtual world. What I think of is how when using FS98, along with Squawk Box, you still had a lot of imagination needed to fill in the gaps, but man I spent probably 750 or more hours on that sim- more than any other sim since (FS2000, 2002, FS9, FSX). Why is that? Many reasons, but my point is that sometimes you can be given the world for realism and yet it still leaves more to be desired. I think it is kind of like when a really good novel is made into a movie. Rarely does the movie capture the same spirit and imagination that you had when your mind filled in all the gaps. I'm not saying we should go back to poor graphics, etc. Just saying that outside of building a full scale cockpit or having some kind of brain-wired device that taps into your neural system, I do not think we have all that much farther to go for our sims to be any more realistic in many ways. But, I'm excited to see what happens in the next 10 years! Eric Tomlin Flight Line Simulations www.FlightLineSimulations.com

I watched some videos of outerra and if I was drunk or had bad sight I would have believed that virtual world was actually the real world so it's a very big improvement of the graphics age. But yes, as long as we don't have systems to fool the brain we're in a real cockpit there is not much left to advance. I believe a full body suit with sensors and visual googles is not too far away though.

I believe a full body suit with sensors and visual googles is not too far away though. I agree with both you and Eric. What prompted that post...was, if you do fire up FS98 again...as I did for a laugh...and see those green-triangle mountains, the blotches and chunks of brown and green to represent land...and the mere grey blocks of texture for the neolithic airports we all drooled over in that year...I can only imagine...that in 16 years from now...we WILL HAVE a head piece that you sit in ANY chair of your home...turn it on..close your eyes...and you BECOME the center of whatever program is in play, You will touch, see, run, move, step into the cockpit...feel, control...as the brain cortex is stimulated directly, and no longer via your eyes, ears, nose, tactile via your skin... This is not Dick Tracy. I feel so strongly that this will happen. It will be safe. It will be affordable. The one only true danger...I see...is that it could be even more beyond the addictive patterns we see with people and their electronic 'fix'....their cell phones. Having said that though....technology will never be dictated to by social moires....whether a scope of technology can in the long term, cause harm to the social or mental health of an individual, will never stop its advance. In 16 years....we will have this..if not sooner.... On goes the head-piece, close your eyes...and be where ever....and whom ever you wish to be....a commercial pilot, walking down the jet way towards the cockpit, or Conan...reaching for his sword.....perhaps, only 16, or less years away..... Technology advances, for entertainment, for medical, and unfortunately...for war as well...but....I will be the first in line, for my AVIATOR Interface head piece, and be done with cpu's...gpu's...and will be using the most marvelous, and never to be duplicated combo of a CPU/GPU....the human mind....and its infinite depth to realization, comprehension, and format...... I can't wait..... I can't wait..... I deleted FS98, after a step down memory lane...and am back in 2014 with P3D. One day....P3D will be a step, down memory lane..... another Sesquashtoo classic. The mind, never stops...always ponders, Craig! Cheers! ^_^

Well, I can see how highly this will benefit the addict porn users Can't wait to step inside the real cockpit in hopefully less than 16 years though... Hopefully the world will still be there, beautiful as we know it today.

Well, for myself, near retirement, it will have to be through Aviator Interface , for my SkyMaster, or stepping up to a 737-900 (smile). Tushka, you and I both know that this is coming....but for me at my age....I hope rather sooner, .............than later..........
