Automatic Landings

Ok thanks a lot.

Hi, AF330,

I agree with the others who welcome your enthusiasm.  However I also agree with those who are saying you need to start from basics.

Right now, you are trying to fly one of the most complex aircraft, an Airbus, without understanding basic principles of landing using ILS or navigation using VOR.  It is hard for people to respond because your questions are all over the place -- ILS operation, decision height/decision altitude, VOR operation, flying on an airway.  On top of that you are also mixing in questions that are specific to the very complex Airbus systems.

There are basic tutorials that come with FS9 and FSX on taking off, landing, flying an ILS approach and on VOR navigation.  They use much simpler aircraft.  You need to learn these basic skills one at a time and then move on to flying an Airbus simulation.  Real world pilots usually begin with a simple aircraft like a Cessna, learn to takeoff and land visually, then move on to instrument navigation (including landing), and only after many flying hours go on to learn to fly complex aircraft like the Airbus.  While you don't need to spend so many hours, you would do much better by starting with the Cessna.  Also, things happen much faster in an Airbus than in a Cessna, especially during approach and landing.

He stated in his other post that these questions are for a project he is doing.  Perhaps it would help if he clarified exactly what the project is.

To me it doesn't even sound like he has used a basic addon like the AXE, I was under the impression these questions are not flight sim related.

Rob, you may well be right.  It sounds like he somehow dived into Airbus flying in the middle of some procedures without going through basic handling of the Airbus and with a rather uneven knowledge of basic instrument navigation.

AF330, it would be helpful if you would explain what you are trying to accomplish -- what your goal is in asking your questions.  If you are using a specific Airbus add-on, please say what it is.

Hi,

No there are no add-on.

My post went automatically to Hanger Chat as it was not related to FSX but more about real planes. Basically, my goal was to learn if we could do any automatic approaches with VOR or NDB, but I had to learn the ILS thing to understand! ;)

In short, no. VORs and NDBs are strictly navigational aids. While they are sometimes used to help one during an approach to an airport, they are not involved in the actual landing.
