Just bought 737-NGX today & questions.

Featured Replies

Hello, this is my first post.  I have been thinking about getting this plane for a long time now and I bought it today as well as the 600/700 add-on.

My question is when I looked at the FAQ it says that I need "FlexNet" in my services.  I have Win 7 64 premium and when I look in services I do not see it.  Is this a very important file?  What does it do?  I have not installed the 737 yet because I don't want to mess anything up so I will await a response.  If I DO need it where do I get it or does it install with the plane?

Also, it says I have to make sure my "Texture_Max_Load=4096.  I looked in my FSX.cfg file and it shows a 9 not a 4096.  Is this important too?  And if so why?

Please help as I want to install this plane and get the fun and learning started.

Thank you.

Paul

FlexNet will be installed alongside your NGX series. The important thing here is not to kill that process when you see it in your task manager. It's required for running the NGX and it hardly needs any resources.

Texture_Max_Load=4096 is for the highest quality of the NGX graphics. It will run just as fine with a different value, so nothing to worry about, either.

BTW, full real names required in the PMDG fora, pls.

Thank you for clarifying that.  Now I can install it.  This is my first PMDG plane.

Best regards,

Is this a very important file?  What does it do?

The manual tells you what it does. It's not a file. It's a Windows service.

You'll note the intro also notes that certain guides tell you to turn it off. If you've never followed a guide to turn it off, you should be fine. Always pay attention to conditional statements like that. They're kinda important.

Is this important too?  And if so why?

I believe the intro manual also states why, but it should be pretty obvious:

It's a setting that tells FSX what the MAX TEXTURE size is that it can LOAD.

If it's below 4096, you won't be able to see the high resolution textures that are included with the aircraft.

I commend you on actually reading the intro manual (it seems many don't), but I'd suggest that you might want to take a little more of a careful read of it if you do read it again

Thank you for your reply.  I am not as well versed about these things as most are, hence my asking.  I read made a cursory glance and saw this.  I am the kind actually that likes to read and understand every page no matter how many pages.  I used to work these very jets for a major airline.  Retired now.  So I have a lot of familiraity with the cockpit but also the underlying systems.  25 years plus Air Force plus a lot of schooling.  Licensed A&P, FCC avionics technician.  I know how the planes work but not how PMDG works or how FSX handles things.

Cheers.

Yeah, the latter part is what it all boils down to, unfortunately (which is why the intro manual has all of that near the front). A good assumption to make is that if the intro doesn't infer that it's user preference, it's a good idea.

...or, if you'd like to just give it a go without altering anything, just be sure to try the suggestions in the intro if things don't seem to be working correctly.

I'm looking for a little help here, as I TRULY can't remember.

Ryan come out saying that the 4096 textures did not affect the NGX itself a week or two after the NGX was initially released?  I'm not sure if he reverted back, frankly I really don't know, but that they weren't needed for a high res flight deck is what I remember. I believe he said the Texture Max Load was for Ground textures.

Anyone know about this?

Thanks.

That's why I asked.  I assumed the same also.  Hopefully someone will chime in with a definitive answer.  Because if everything loads at that resolution won't that cause a lot of VAS OOM's?

I run with TML at 2048, and the NGX flight deck is terrific.  I also run my REX/REX4 Textures at 2048, all for the same reason that you're asking - the dreaded OOM, as 90% of my scenery is payware or payware quality freeware.

But I do not know for sure what the actual answer is to the NGX flight deck textures.

Remember that I said "max texture size is that it can load." It's not loading everything at that size. It's just setting a limiter on the largest texture size that is permissible to be loaded. It won't contribute to OOM errors because the texture is still loaded in the background. The sim simply displays it at the lower resolution. You'd have to physically alter the texture sets to affect this (this is why various add-ons offer various texture sizes and don't just alter the sim's TML value).

Ok, thanks for clarifying this.

Well, I loaded up a 737 and had a look.  Now I want to install the 600/700 and some liveries too.

However, I looked at my FSX.cfg and noticed that TML is still 9.

But I checked Win 7's services and sure enough it installed FlexNet.

I wonder if I should change TML to 4096?  Maybe I wasn't seeing the correct textures?  Dunno yet.

That's one of the setting levels from within FSX itself.

I would. At least 2048. It's not "right" or "wrong" - it's just "good" or "better" (and "better" is only really relevant to better quality versus better frame rates).

Ok, I changed it to 4096 and I see no difference at all.  In fact the cockpit doesn't look as good as I have seen in YouTubes.  I don't understand why.  I have my frame rate locked at 30 and it never goes below.  Here's my system specs:
