Will this upgrade approach work?

Featured Replies

I'm finally upgrading from a tired old E8600 dual core 3.3GHz and ATI Radeon 4800 video card to the following:

Intel Core i7-4790K OC 4.4 GHz (Turbo) ASUS Maximus VII Hero Z97 MSI GTX 970 OC Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB DDR3 2400MHZ FirePower Fatal1ty 750W Power Supple Cooler Master V8 GTS-High Performance CPU Cooler Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower Case.

My question is I'm pulling my hard drive out of the old box which just has my OS on it (Win 7 pro), and my SSD which currently just has my FSX on it and popping it into the new box. Other than having to do the Microsoft OS thing with a new motherboard is there anything else that might surprise me, other than the increase in performance.... rolleyes.gif

P.S. Trying to keep things as simple as possible, FSX over the years has already taken a mental toll on me wacko.png This will also be a box for P3D!

Also, what is a fair price to give my IT friend who is doing this for me? I'm thinking around $200, he really only ask for what you're willing to pay but I surely don't want to short change him? Any thoughts?

Cheers

Martin

Since you are making major upgrades (motherboard, CPU, video card type) you may have to reinstall Windows. I upgraded my system early this year, and I stayed with AMD processor and ATI video card, yet I still had to reinstall. If you do have to reinstall Windows, that will mean you will have to reinstall FSX and related apps, since your registry will be reinitialized.

BTW, I bought the HAF-X after many years on my old Cooler Master - it's a great case!

200 sounds reasonable to me, but I am not an expert. I've built servers for a friend's business a few years back, but as she is a close friend, I only felt comfortable with letting her buy me a few lunches and dinners - but that's just me.

You already know that you will probably have to contact Microsoft support in order to activate Windows on the new MB. Once that's done, everything should cook right along. I seriously doubt you'll have to do a full reinstall of Windows.

Enjoy the performance increase!

Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to a faster PC, tired of always being in the FPS single digits

Does FSX or any addons detect a new MB and require re-activation?

Thanks

Martin

Probably some.  Typically FSDT/FlightBeam addons need a reactivation I've noticed with a hardware change

I seriously doubt you'll have to do a full reinstall of Windows.

Actually, it's most definitely recommended if you want to run your system optimal performance and stability. As an IT guy for many years, I can guarantee you that it's almost a Golden rule in computers never to cut corners if you don't want to shoot yourself in the foot in the long run.
