  1. You brought up some memories with this sentence. I had my first flight sim experience with my Commodore 64 - and I can still vividly remember, 30 years later, flying over Southern California and imagining the surrounding hills and mountains, all from simple wire-based outlines (not to mention the putt-putt sound of the engine). The same applies to the old text-based adventure games - my mind filled in all of the blanks. That is NOT to say that I'm complaining about where we've progressed to - I could not have imagined the immersion we have today. But there is a lot to say about "imagination" - you'd be surprised (maybe) how popular the old Amiga/Atari/Intellivision games are. A couple of years ago, I fired up my Amiga 500 after 20 years of being boxed up in the attic (where the temps are often > 120F.) without a hitch - that was a WONDERFUL system!
  2. I am in the process of re-installing Win7 and EVERYTHING else because I had an issue where I could no longer open Quicken 2014. I'm 99% sure it was because of a system restore, including my OS, I had performed while attempting to trouble-shoot a non-FSX related issue. This had also snowballed to other applications failing when starting. I know this isn't directly related to your FSX issue, but I wanted to warn that system restores can cause problems instead of resolving them.
  3. Thank you for posting your thoughts. I cannot discuss the technical aspects, for I have never tried P3D, and the reason is simply the financial aspect. I do not qualify for any of the discounted versions, and I cannot justify the expense for the regular license. It's exactly the same as with my photography software - there is no doubt that Adobe Photoshop is the most highly ragarded, but there is no way I will pay a monthly fee of 50 dollars for it, when an alternative, Corel Paintshop Pro, gives me most of the same features but for one months' cost of Photoshop. I can't help thinking that LM should consider people like myself as a potential market, for I'm sure that I'm not the only one holding off for this reason. For now, I am more than happy with FSX, especially with the fixes/updates being made to FSX-SE (not to mention having paid 5 dollars for it when it was first released).
  4. I enjoyed your post as a whole. My first flight sim was in the early 1980's on my Commodore 64 - it was a wire-framed simulator running on an 8-bit system with slide-show frame rates. And at the time, I thought it was FANTASTIC! When showing it to a friend who was a pilot, I kept telling him "Look! You can see the outline of the mountains in So. Cal. - it's like you're really flying!". So I've already "dialed-back" my expectations, and feel FSX with the wonderful add-ons is a marvel - especially on three monitors! Over the years, I've learned not to focus on things like what DX the sim is running - they change faster than Mickey Rooney changed wives (this probably dates me). Instead, I enjoy the moment, and am extremely grateful to people like Pete Dowson and all the vendors who have added such joy to this hobby, (INCLUDING DoveTail)!
  5. Thank you for taking the time to follow-up - too often, people post having an error but then do not let us know how things work out - odds are is one person has an issue that there will be others having the same issue too. Glad to hear things are resolved - happy flying!
  6. LOL - that's exactly what happened to me, so when I re installed Windows I installed FSX-SE solely - and I LOVE it, because I was suffering from OOMs, especially on pay-ware airports, photo-sceneries and PMDG aircraft at the same time. My wife must be influencing me because I couldn't justify the cost of a regular Professional license for P3D; I had no problems justifying the sale price of FSX-SE.
  7. You always have the option of disabling automatic updates of Games via the Steam control panel http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/81470/is-there-any-way-to-stop-steam-downloading-updates/81471#81471 And you can then manually force an update when you are ready: http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/127901/is-there-a-way-to-manually-update-a-game
  8. Hi Mark, Just a thought: I always end up learning much more creating vs. reading write-ups, because I do a lot a research to avoid looking like an idiot (although sometimes I look like one anyway  ). Maybe you can do a joint effort with someone - you doing the initial write-up and someone else then reviewing/updating it. Cheers! Stevan
  9. Note if you wish to muck around with the GTN 750 OUTSIDE of FEX, you can download the free GTN 750 Trainer lite. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=5380 Personally, I LOVE this product and have no regrets loosing RealityXP since I moved to FSX-SE.
  10. Glad you found the solution, and equally glad you posted it on the forum - I guarantee someone, sometime will have a similar problem. Happy flying (and weekend)!
  11. I would add "Drink heavily (a watered-down version of your favorite cocktail) while paying two or three times the normal price".
  12. If you do go to Steam, I have found the GTN750 to be an OUTSTANDING replacement for Reality XP. I know that there are planes where you can configure the GNS into the panels, but I personally LOVE the GTN750 and have grown completely accustomed to using it as a pop-up. There is one negative, and that is the default maps that it comes with (U.S.). But purchasing the full set of maps from Garmin cost me another $25 USD, and the GTN750 manual has instructions how to update the maps (took me a couple of minutes). But don't take my word - search the forum for other opinions. Cheers!
  13. I'm wasn't aware that they are working on a new FTX Central, but this week they corrected the OBJECTFLOW.DLL issue, and they even included an executable to update this DLL in all sceneries and airports as needed. It's working like a champ!
  14. I'm kinda surprised too. ASN is one of the most important add-ons for me, although AS 2012 has been working pretty good. Maybe people are just too busy flying today!
  15. Don't know how long it's been out, but the latest release (1.3.2) of FSX Fiber Accelerator now works with FSX-SE.
  16. I should have you talk to my wife - she doesn't listen to me. It's become a weekly task for me to run full system virus scans and uninstall unwanted apps from her laptop - her natural reflex is to click OK (unfortunately the opposite when responding to me <g>).
  17. I use it with my stand-alone installation of FSX-SE - works great!
  18. That's why I'm grateful for RAAS - it ensures I'm taking off or landing at the correct runway (the numbers being a blur <g>).
  19. I have AccuFeel with my PMDG 747 and no issues (although I would be nervous flying a real 747 with some of those noises <g). This is on FSX-SE standalone.
  20. I looks like all of your errors have to do with not being able to access/update CouatlAddons.ini. My installation (FSX-SE only) points to my User/Computer name in the "Owner" directory (e.g. C:\\Users\\Smakar\AppData\\Roaming\\Virtuali\\CouatlAddons.ini). Have you confirmed that this directory exists? If it does, I would try setting permissions to Full Control for whatever User Names are listed. PS - I have a GSX and a bunch of FSDreamTeam and FlightBeam airports with FSX-SE and no issues - but that doesn't mean I'm a fan of Coauatl <g>
  21. Great news - thank you for the hard work - I love your products!
  22. Hi David, I do not have those two add-ons, but I recently purchased their 29 Palms (KTNP) airport, and I LOVE it. It has great detail, including a good size of scenery surrounding the airport, and also includes people at the airport and even trucks driving by on the adjacent road. It's become a favorite of mine for single-engine aircraft. If their other airports are of the same quality, I think you will be pleased. Stevan Edited to correct Psalms to Palms - LOL
  23. Hi Derek, I have an AMD FX-8350 CPU , no overclocking, and run DX10 with the DX10 Scenery Fixer (which is WONDERFUL). No issues with the CPU being maxed out, but I also do not have my settings maxed either. Stevan
